It's been quite a while since Trimble last popped up on our radar, but the company looks to be making a respectable showing for itself with its new Yuma UMPC, which packs all the ruggedness you'd expect from the company (MIL-STD-810F and IP67 ratings) plus some decent enough specs. That includes a sunlight-readable 7-inch WVGA touchscreen, the requisite 1.6GHz Atom N270 processor, a 32GB SSD drive, built-in WiFi, Bluetooth and GPS, ExpressCard and SDIO slots for expansion, and not one but two geotag-enabled cameras. No word on a price just yet, but Trimble says it should be shipping by April. Stella,

You might want to start a different thread so that it gets noticed.
We need to know what you value. Do you want to play CDs or are you looking for something to work with an iPod? Do you want Bluetooth and hands-free calling from your speakerphone? Are you looking for realistic, high-fidelity sound or are you more interested in exaggerated, thumping bass? Is HD radio important to you? How about Sirius/XM? I drove a severely injured stranger to the ER today. He lost control of his vehicle and it went over a steep embankment and rolled. The roof was crushed, the windshield broken out, and the body of it was a twisted mess.

I'd have done the same thing, without hesitation, even if he had said (or written) something I found insulting. You underestimate Latino women when you suggest that they might be so petty as to let a trivial jest I made online keep them from helping me were my life in danger. Problems:

Not designed for use at temperatures cars reach in summertime. According to a CDC report, cars parked in direct sunlight can reach internal temperatures of 131F-172F when outside temperatures are 80F-100F. Example netbook: Dell Mini 9: Max temp = 95F operating, 149F storage. Even if the car only hits 140F, the system won't be operable until it cools about 50 degrees (figure 45 minutes to an hour for the temperature to stabilize).

Not designed for off-vertical-axis viewing of more than 15 degrees (think of a laptop with the screen tilted slightly too much).

Display not designed for use in bright daylight.

Looks like one of those ghetto pimp-my-ride cars. Absurdly large screen for use in a smart fortwo. Fine if you're looking to pick up fat Mexican chicks with tattoos, though.

Requires extensive mechanical fabrication to install. I want a double-DIN unit that mounts easily in any vehicle, not a friggin' summer vacation project.

Theft. No removable faceplate. No alarm when powered off.

Startup and shutdown time.

Touch interface control of analog audio rather than discrete knobs and switches (touch-screen sucks as an interface in a moving vehicle)

No FM or satellite radio.

No built-in dock for iPod (see my initial post in this thread).

Crappy audio output stage.

No crossovers built into unit.

No bridgeable high-power amp (I don't want an external amp -- and it's my thread ;)

No shock sensors to function as an alarm.

GPS not in driver's line of site and lacking interface optimized for in-car use.

Oh I almost forgot... INTERNET on the go... web-cam streaming, so your rally to the grocery store can be sent live to your home based memory back up. Heck VIDEO conferencing.... screw going to the office. just go to the car and start up the conferencing software... contact some other guy in another smart and do business.
and no I did not forget you guys that want a scangauge PC version... they are out there. It's just software and a cable... what do you think the rest of the tuner world uses on their cars!! Yes laptops.
