Actually the diesel is cheaper to maintain than a gas or petrol powered Smart because generally diesels are far more reliable than gas powered vehicles due to the very high compression needed in the diesel process.<br /> <br /> A diesel engine will outlast a gas one many times over and modern diesels now have longer service intervals.<br /> <br /> Gas powered vehicles may be cheaper to own but diesels hold onto more of their value especially here in the Uk.
