Hi Dave,

The starting sequence is a safety / security sequence (stops the teenagers borrowing the car)...
Must be in N to start. If the smart is stopped in R, it will not shift into N unless the foot brake is held down.... makes sense - you don't want to start it in gear... it is the press the foot brake that is the key... when stationary, the brake must be pushed to change gear. Gear changes are by electronics activating the clutch servo.

USA manual pdf attached.

Hi Ian. Thanks for your helpful reply. The previous owner handed me service history and everything he had by way of paperwork, but there was no instruction manual. I looked under the passenger seat, but not there. Under the driver's seat there was only a fire extinguisher.
Presumably the first owner didn't pass the manual to him.
I shall try to download the version you mentioned. Do you know the download site by any chance please? I'm not very au fait with finding these things. I obviously need the idiot's guide to everything! -- don't want workshop manual by the way, legal or otherwise! Please be a bit more specific...

The Owners manual should be in a plastic folder, stored under the passenger seat with Velcro. A PDF copy of the USA issue is / was available from a download site.

The Workshop manual is only available to MB smart centers and is a proprietary, electronic document system that is not available for general sale. There are some old versions available on CD... but they are effectively bootleg / illegal.
