The Mark (Roman Numerals) stand for the different phases...but do not necessarily correspond to the year models or Generations. I am not all that familiar with them, but some of the differences between them are whether the window washers are mounted on the cowling or the washer arms, whether there are coil-over springs on the front shocks, etc.
Matter fo fact, if there is someone out there that has a better definition of the changes, how about a post!
I'm driving a Smart Four Two Pure in Aachen, Germany, since 07/1999.
It has just 45 hp and the color is blue (inside and outside ).
The 450 has a long history with many small changes. Almost every year, some parts are changed.
There was only one big change called 2nd Generation in 01/2003.
- ESP instead of Trust Plus.
- Break prevents the car from rolling back when started on steep roads.
- 700 instead of 600 cc
- more power
- gears changing faster

Wow...cool...now if I can just find a reliable, righteous dealer for parts for my 450 (2000) Cabriolet...hit a hog and shattered what we in the states would call the right front fender...(wing?). Black plastic, if anyone has any interest!
