Is it really a requirement to use premium fuel? I've had other cars that recommended premium fuel but ran fine on 87 octane. The ECU adjusted for the lower octane. Is the the Smart car ECU "SMART" enough to to that? Please advise. With oil running up over $90 a barrel, gas prices are going up with little hope of getting cheap again.

I use 91 octane ( highest in CA) only. The differents is only $2 per tank, or ( in my case) $2 a week.
I didnt worry much about it. Wth the MPG i get, the difference in a fill up is not really significant to me. Not worth using cheaper gas if in the long run it is detrimental to the car.
I thought the same why high octane gas but I am worried the engine may not run as good with lower octane. I find the difference in price is not a big deal for so little amount of gas it takes to fill up if the engine requires it then I will keep it running good. Hope if you decide to use the lower octane it doesn't ruin the car good luck. Your decision. Dollar different isn't that much.

Could damage catalytic converter

Why would you want to use a gasoline quality that is other than what is specified in your owners manual?

i used unleaded 95 in my former 451mhd. In Denmark we have 92, 95 and 98 to choose from.

One liter 95 cost about 12 danish kroner, witch is about 8 us-dollar for a gallon :O

Today i drive a smart passion convertible cdi (turbodiesel)

$8? That is terrible! I use 89 octane and mine seems to run just fine on it. No knocking etc. I have a 2008 Smartie.

todays price:

95unleaded 8,69 usd pr gallon!

Diesel 7,71 usd pr. gallon!

I agree with others on using the highest octane, thats what the manual calls for.
Shell V-power 99oktane :-)

I believe the price here for a liter is now $1.50 x 41/2 = $ 6.75 a imperial gallon.

Is ever going to end???

Yes you can purchase the electrical steering option but you may need to source one from the UK directly, or ask if Mercindo can order and install it for you. But I have heard other smart users liking the natural feel of unassisted steering. So I gue…
