Emerald Coast Smart Car Club,

I've gotten a lot of enthusiastic feedback on our March 21st get together. Liza Jackson Park looks to be the best place for us. Several members pointed out that it’s close to auto supply stores and other amenities. When we researched this spot last year we found that it’s got 2 large pavilions, grills, tables, plenty of parking, and, while it’s right on the water may not be as windy as Navarre Beach can sometimes be. It’s also closer for many members traveling from points further east.

I looked on-line to see if I could find the phone numbers to inquire about reserving a pavilion. No luck. If they’re not reserved then they’re on a first come basis. I don’t think the Club wants to spend any money on a pavilion so we’ll just set up camp early. If both of the large pavilions are reserved or occupied when we arrive we’ll either set up in several of the smaller ones or perhaps go to Plan B and relocate to Navarre Beach. So look for those cute little Smart cars when you get there. My cell number is 850-206-4912 if you need it.

Let’s set the “official” start time at 12 o’clock noon. I’ll get there earlier. So far I've got the following Club members signed up:

If I've missed you please let me know and I'll add your name to the list. If you haven't replied and you're still on the fence, well, get off and come out on Saturday. It's shaping up to be a great day. On the day's agenda are the following:

Pot Luck
Let’s keep this simple. We’ll need charcoal for the grills, stuff to grill (burgers, hotdogs, etc.) drinks & ice, plates & such, and side dishes. I’m a guy, so I’m sure I’ve left some things out. If everyone will let me know what they would like to bring to the party I’ll keep a check list so we don’t have 4 people brings sodas & chips and 3 people bringing charcoal and plates. Cynthia & I returned from New Orleans a week ago and brought home some of the world’s best andouille. My wonderful wife has agreed to make a big pot of chicken and andouille gumbo. We’ll bring the serving bowls and spoons. Ok, now let me know what you’d like to bring. Desserts are always welcomed.

Smart Auto Mechanics
Several of the members have expressed interest in doing some minor maintenance and work on their Smarts on Saturday. Luckily we’ve got mechanically inclined members who have volunteered to assist. Some of the activities will be:

- Assistance with performing an oil change
- Lubricating the stick to prevent it from being stuck
- Installing a new horn
- Checking maintenance codes with a ScanGauge
- Others?

If you’d like to add to this list please reply to all and see if there is any expertise from the Club members in that arena and if they’re willing to assist you with that task.

Ok, that’s all I can think of for now. It’s a pretty full plate. Oh, speaking of full plates, what are you going to bring to Saturday’s get together?

Hello Vic

My wife Kathy and I might just come to your little get together if we can swing it. We live in Black, AL (a little over 90 miles) and have had our smart since the last of November 2008. Still have less than 4,000 miles and enjoy the car very much. We have a 2009 Silver with Black stripe Passion. I had a crash with a large dog about a month ago and have had the pleasure of changing out a left front fender myself. It wasn't as bad as I originally thought it might be. At least replacement plastic isn't really all that expensive - cost me $211.82 with shipping from Crown Mercedes in Birmingham, AL. I would be interested in the maintenance issues you listed. We had one of our largest turn outs to date with a record 12 Smart cars and 18 members! Thanks to all that joined us, especially Mike & Beth and Linda who made their first meeting. It was great meeting them (and their Smarts).

We met and talked in the Uptown Station parking lot from 12pm noon until around 2:30pm when 9 of us enjoyed some wings at Buffalo Reef before heading our own ways. The weather was perfect and I think not only did everyone learn something about our Smart cars but we all had a wonderful time re-connecting with the Club members. Photos have been uploaded to the Club's website. Look under Photo Gallery/Album for the 17 pictures.

Martin Owen from Crystal Beach Development is the director of marketing and advertising for Uptown Station. You saw him snapping a few photos. He posted them on their website (http://uptownstation.com/emerald-coast-smart-car-club-visits-uptown...). I'll post copies in the photo album on our website. He said that the Muscle Car Club meets for coffee & cars at Uptown Station monthly and said that if we'd like to meet there again he'd gladly publicize the event for us.

Our next get together will be Saturday, May 30th, at LuLu's which is located at 220 E 25th Ave in Gulf Shores, AL. Mark your calendars! Many of you know this as the restaurant on the water which is owned by Jimmy Buffett's sister, Lucy. Check out their website for more info. I'll send out more details as we get into the month of May.

The Emerald Coast Smart Car Club will be meeting Saturday, July 25th, at 8:15am for breakfast at Sailor's Grill on Navarre Beach. So far I have 15 Club members confirmed for the event and 10 Smart cars. If you'd like to join us please let me know and I'll add your name to the growing list. See you there!

Smarties,

Our August 29th get together which will be at the Best Western in Navarre. Nick has arranged for us to have the run of the pool, BBQ, and air-conditioned conference room beginning at 4pm. We're going to have a pot luck like the one we had when we all met at Liza Jackson Park. Nick has also volunteered to provide the hamburgers, hotdogs, buns, and cheese. Thanks Nick! (Now I wonder what Linda will bring...hmmmmm.)

We want to make sure we've got a good selection of food, so I'll be compiling a running list of what everyone plans on bringing. I'd ask that when you RSVP please also let me know what dish you're going to bring. We had a huge turn out for our last pot luck and suspect we'll have just as many next month. I'm really looking forward to this one!

Emerald Coast Smart Car Club Members,

Our March get together will be at Philly's in Pensacola on Saturday, March 27th, at 1:00pm. Located at 3900 Creighton Road they offer authentic Philly subs at $4.50 for a 6' and $6.95 for the 12". They import Amoroso's rolls from Philadelphia to make their Philly cheese steaks. They even sell Tastykakes! Directions, menus, photos, and more can be found on their website at www.phillysonline.com.
