Recently our car had coolant cap come loose or I didn't get it tightwhen checking fluids. Regardless of cause the car ran fine untill it slowed on highway one day and shut off in about a mile and left my wife broke down on the roadside. This was a few days since I checked levels but don't usually remove all caps to see levels. All indicators only came on when the engine shut off. It doesn't look good. The dipstick started to melt. I have scheduled appt with Smart center to hopefully learn exact reason for no warning of any problem before disaster.
Has anyone experienced any issues like this? What if you get a hose failure or any type of leak?
Update. Since my original post many things have happened. My car was checked at a dealer . The cars systems were all working and the car thought it was just fine. The problem was that the engine was ruined from lack of coolant. I have since learned that Smart cars just have one sensor for a light. No low level sensor or others. Other cars may be the same but many have added the low coolant sensor. Regardless of how the cap came off or loose I know that at highway speeds in a few hundred miles of driving the coolant will be purged out enough that the sensor has no coolant touching it and things go down hill fast from there.
I did inquire through the Smart USA website but got no response until I contacted the company president. I did not ask the dealer to as I bought my car from an individual to avoid the year wait and my car had 27000 miles on it. I had been able to purchase a donor engine transmission assembly in the mean time.
The response from the Smart rep was great. We discussed my entire situation. Smart very kindly assisted me in swapping the old assemblies with the new. I owe them many thanks. I now have our Smart back at home and it feels great. It was a long 3 months going through all the processes.
Please check your radiator cap and make sure it is tight. It is important.
we have a $#!t for brains talk show host that pulled a stunt on his station webpage/blog last week "spot the smart car"
this clown knows nothing about smart and he's an idiot, he is "don wade" and his wife is "roma", i refer to them as "don lame an…
Ian;
Shipping damage is also a common problem for dealerships that sell American cars (no ocean voyage). I've seen cars getting very rough treatment by unloaders at dealerships - the cars look like they were flying off those skeleton transporters!…
This may not be as dumb as it sounds! I've also had a weird starting drill, often having to turn the ignition off and on again to make the starter engage. Recently, I installed an OBDII tester that's also a dual trip meter, tach, speedometer, instan…

BTW, the Devon Dealership is still on all the SMART "Find a Dealer" search, as well as other sites still list Devon, and in most cases the link still works. Alth…
Hey, Smarties!
There's a mean-spirited guy named "priggly" (gregg_vw?) acting like a wet blanket to us Smart owners. He's apparently based on the Edmunds website, and likes to make derogatory remarks about Smarts being "unsafe", referring to some w…
