Rear Performance Springs for Smart 451

3 GUYZ, Inc. is a manufacturing company just outside Portland, Oregon. We acquired two Smart 451s as commuter cars, and rapidly became enthusiasts. As a result, we felt the 451 could use some changes in suspension to make it more enjoyable to drive than it already is!

We set out to design a new approach in springs for the Smart ForTwo 451 with these objectives:

• Better cornering response
• Improved roll resistance in corners and avoidance maneuvers
• Lower stance in the rear of the car

We have developed a new progressively wound spring to directly replace the stock rear Smart 451 springs. We concentrated on the rear suspension, because we found the best opportunity for improvement with the lowest cost and installation effort.

The improved spring rate in our final rear spring design proved to be much better in resisting body roll through corners, improved steering response, lowered the rear stance of our test car by ¾”, providing a more level car stance, and improving the rear wheel well appearance around the tire.

Other improvements were noted as well:

• Reduced “Rocking” on Acceleration and Deceleration
• Reduced Under Steer (Push) in Corners
• Less Steering Effort
• Reduced Front Tire Wear

We observed a dramatic reduction in the “rocking” of the chassis as our test car accelerated and slowed in city traffic (As it turns out, we are currently seeing more sales for this reason than any other). We saw significantly less under steer (Push) as we entered corners. With the rear of the car sitting flatter through corners, we found that the car responded with less steering effort, and more deliberate and stable performance. As we rolled up some miles on our test car, we noted that we saw significantly less front tire wear than before the springs were changed. We attribute this to the reduced under steer.

We have powder coated our springs to resist road spray and corrosion to last the lifetime of the car, and have established a Limited Lifetime Warranty to assure our customers they are getting the best in value and quality.

Smart Center of Portland has introduced 3 GUYZ Rear Springs and has sold over 25 sets in just a few weeks! Customer satisfaction to date has been 100% with positive comments on handling and a more stable feel.
