So i just took delivery on my smart passion coupe 2 days ago (3/18), and i LOVE IT!!!
However, I have noticed one worrisome thing: all 3 times i have driven to/from work since i got the car (about a 20 mile trip each way, driving an average of 50mph, not really a lot of stop and go traffic), everytime i park and get out, i notice a slight burning smell coming from the back vent (where the engine is) outside the car (no smell inside). has anyone else had this problem, or know what it might be? i don't know if maybe it's b/c the car is so new! let me know :) thanks!!

The smell is normal. It is just the cosmoline used as a protective coating on the engine & exhaust components to prevent rust & corosion. The smell is from the cosmoline burning off & the odor will go away with time. Nothing to worry about.

Well the muffler vents are very close and vent upwards when the car is parked. you might be smelling that,

It is normal, but i have never experienced that with other new cars. The smell can stay quite long, unfortunately.

yup, it's still there unfortunately, but it's only been a week. at least now i know that it's normal! it was definitely a little worrisome when i got out of my brand new car and smelled a burning smell! haha. thanks for responses!!!

I've had my car for 1 year now and I still get the smell from the rear of the car. I don't think anything is wrong but I did think it would have stopped by now

I was told that it was because the engine is so close to the rear of the car and that it was nothing to worry about - the car was built to handle it, it just smells when it gets hot.

Its the cat. ozone controler in the exhaust system. The catiolitic converter can get so hot that it glows red, this is to burn all the un-burned oil and fuel from the engine. It is normal to get that burning smell. You will have that burning smell for the life of the car.
