I think I found the answer at smartmaniacs. I thought the VIN would be the same format as here in North America. My old Ford Contour started with "1F" (1 for built in USA and F for Ford Motor Company). For smart....
"From 2003 onwards
1-3 World Manufacturer Code: WME=Micro Compact Car smart GmbH, Renningen
4-6 Series: 450=city-coupé/fortwo, 452=roadster/roadster-coupé,
454=forfour
7 Body shape: 3=Coupé, 4=Cabrio/Roadster
8+9 Engine: 00=30 kW Diesel, 30=37 kW Petrol, 32=45 kW Petrol,
33=35 kW Petrol, 34=60 kW Petrol, 35=40 kW Petrol
10 Steering: 1=LHD, 2=RHD
11 Build plant: J, K & L stand for different buildings in Smartville, Hambach
12-17 Sequential ascending number: 000000"
I did some research and checked another site with actual VIN's. As an example I shall use:
WMEEK31XX8K027575 A red Cabriolet
WMEE= WMI (World Manufacturer Identifier) Where assembled WA-W0 Germany; EE = Manufacturer - Smart
K31X= Fourth through eighth vehicle identification number digit reveals the vehicle features such as body style, engine type, model, series, etc. (note: J=coupe K=cabrio) (31=engine type)
X=accuracy check digit (any digit 0-9 or X)
8=year of manufacture (2008)
K=Eleventh vehicle identification number digit reveals the assembly plant for the vehicle. (Smartville, Hambach, FR)
027575=The twelfth to seventeenth vehicle identification number digits indicate the sequence of the vehicle for production as it rolled off the manufacturers assembly line.
I hope this helps explains and demystifies the VIN. Refer to European Union specs per ISO3780.

Just got a ticket because my Solo Exhaust was too loud. I don't even have after market headers. So, consider this a second opinion. Definitely, too loud.
Hi all,
Maybe this is not the best spot for this discussion. But I am looking for a local smart dealer in Annapolis County, NS, Canada.
I just moved into the area from Holland and looking to buy a Smart to drive back and forth to the Halifax Inter…
I bought the little side cargo net for the side plastic panel but I am struggling with the install!!
Does anyone have a good clear pic of theirs installed, or are there any tips for installing this?
Thanks in Advance!!
Ho HO ho.... Nice! Very nice. What I would love is a dusting of snow in Central Florida. I'm certain the chances are ever so slim. Merry Christmas to you and yours. Thanks for sharing the spirit.!
