451 smart fortwo

smart Car

I've been wondering. . . . Some Canadian car dealerships have adjusted car prices (or intend to) due to the increased value of the Canadian dollar.

In certain areas, Canadians are driving across the border to buy a car, since it saves them a few thousand dollars.

Do you think the smart car will adjust it's prices according to the strength of the Canadian dollar?

Or, is this just wishful thinking? That's a bit of a rhetorical question.

Well a few problems specifically related to the smart when a Canadian is trying to buy it in the US. Sorry I don't have the full price break down but will get that copy posted shortly, the price break down shows that with all the requirements to bring a smart into Canada from the US the Canadian car is cheaper.

Add to that the following three items:

1) Warranty for the Canadian 451 smart fortwo is only valid in Canada, they specifically say many times that if you travel outside of Canada and have warranty issues you might have no coverage, they do leave it vague but are clear that you have a Canadian warranty, not a North American warranty :(

2) The warranty Canada gets its 2 years longer then the US warranty which isn't priced into the comparison on prices so if you add that in the Canadian car is maybe $2,000 cheaper then the US version.

3) In Canada the government is giving a $2,000 rebate to people who have purchased or leased the 451 smart fortwo in Canada and if you buy your smart in the US there is no rebate.

One last point that I will make is the 451 smart fortwo passion model as sold in Canada is actually cheaper then the exactly the same equipped smart in the UK, so considering Canada is such a small market for the smart as compared to the UK and the extra shipping cost we in Canada should be happy that we're getting a better deal then the Brits.

The Canadian dollar issue really come into play when you are buying high end/over $50,000 vehicles as even with my BMW X5 it costs $72,000 in Canada but was almost $20,000 cheaper buying it from the US, so in that case was well worth it and on those higher end cars there is less/nothing that needs to be "Canadianized" unlike the cheaper entry level type cars where speedometers, bumpers and other items need to be replaced to be up to Canadian requirements.
Because of the limited numbers of smarts available south of the border, there are people waiting for close to a year, you will not be able to just go down and buy one off the lot like you can with a lot of other models, as long as there is a "line up" to buy a smart, I don't think they will be dropping the price for a while!! Makes the Cdn that much a better deal!!
Very unlikely, stronger doesn't alway's help ya in the car business! They may offer an incentive if the demand was weak, but we did it to you guy's on the "new Beetle" when VW brought them in for about 4k less than what they were go'n for here, and at the auction's they were sell'n for over 30k!! I did that when the Mini came out bought two and fliped them with-in 5 seconds of sign'n the paper work, Made 10k of the deal minus the deposit!
This one I'm keep'n no Flip'n here I'm gonna use it for work and drive it into the ground!!
Sorry to get off topic, I do that some times!
