Ian Pellant replied to Fathi Antaki's discussion 'MHD switching not restarting uphill'
Hi, I can see how the problem can easily occur... in fact by my understanding, it would be hard to avoid. (I don't have MHD on my 2008 pulse; have only test driven MHD stopping on level roads). The inherent problem is in timing the engine…

Ian Pellant replied to Boomer'sRock's discussion 'Removlal of Driver Seat?'
Look on the Evilution smart car site: http://www.evilution.co.uk/index.php?id=493 Gives a good illustrated guide... and as they say... disconnect the battery and wait a while for the side airbags in the seat to deactivate before doing anything. That…

Ian Pellant replied to adrain taylor's discussion '2005 diesel battery'
Your best bet is to either remove the old one and take it to a battery centre; or look at it and note the amp hour rating, width, depth and height and terminal postion... then go to either a smart service centre or a good battery centre. 2005 smart…

Ian Pellant replied to stacey selman's discussion 'ac problems/ transmission problems'
Michelle, It's not just volume of smarts in Europe.. The fault lies with smart USA and the special transmission shift and programming for North America. France, UK, Australia... in fact most the world, have the original transmission shift…

Ian Pellant replied to Sarah Jayne's discussion 'Over revving in 1st Gear'
Sarah, Manchester UK, not Manchester NH? smart 450 (pre 2008) with engine replacement? If you have to rev it a lot before it starts moving in first, then it's probably a clutch adjustment or faulty clutch servo. If the engine has been…

Ian Pellant replied to Andrew D. Clauss's discussion 'Trans repair'
Andy, It seems that the smart USA 451 gear shift lever and programming are a kluge... a variant pasted together for the US market. The shift lever is different to the Euro / World shift which only has N and R on the right and push to the left for 1…

Ian Pellant replied to Andrew D. Clauss's discussion 'Trans repair'
Andrew, I'm curious which component is causing the most grief; aka: 1) the USA shift lever, programming and associated electronics? 2) the clutch mechanism - servo failure, clutch plate failure? 3) mechanical innards - inside the gearbox? 4)…

Ian Pellant replied to David's discussion 'My Smart overhead please help'
Airlock in the coolant hoses... see: http://www.evilution.co.uk/index.php?id=133 The trick seems to be to get the coolant tank higher than the engine. Evilution show jacking up the front of the car... a good steep driveway may be simpler.

Hi Ian!
My dealer finally got a Brabus, so they now have a price list for the special bits. Brace yourself: Front Lower Skirt = $499. USD. Rear Fender Mouldings = $113. per side (!) Yikes! It's good to sell smarts! Hey Detroit, check THIS out!

Dear Ian,

This is a picture of label on our USA Smarts. It is very different from yours. The manual mentions only 155 and 175 wheels. That is it.

Thanks again,

Dan

That's interesting that smart will deliver anywhere IF you have the part number. I have tried to order a Brabus part, but my dealer can't access that order until they have a VIN to enter into the computer, and since the Brabus has not yet been delivered to my dealer, they can't order the part or see the part or price the part. Since we don't get the Pulse here, those tires will probably be locked out of our U.S. parts list.

Dear Ian,

Thank you, so much for getting back to me so soon with exact info that I was looking all over.

Two of the local smart centers advised me to use the same psi on all 4 wheel. Crazy but it is true.

Hey listen I feel that I owe you one. If there anything I can do for you here in USA please let me know.

Thank you so much. I could not wait until tomorrow to check the pressure in tires.

Wow -- RHD!
And, BTW, I am doing exactly what Dan is, and am having trouble getting both sizes by the same manufacturer. Yours are all Continentals, right?

Dear Ian,

I have a set of 6 spoke pulse wheels on my smart and I love it. The problem is that my smart passion came with 155 in the front and 175 in the back. Not a good ride so I replaced them with pulse 175 in front and 195 in the back. But the problem that I am having is what is the proper preasure for pulse tires? I need your help on that. Please let me know what is recomended tire presure for pulse 6 spoke tires. Thank you, Dan

Ian, take the tow eye bolt that comes with your smart (under the carpeted foot well, passengers side) and show it to a machine shop. they can decipher the pitch of the treads and duplicate it for you. I you are going to put something lightweight back there I'd use a good hard aluminum. If used to design a towing contraption... use steel. they will use a round rod blank in the lathe and in minutes come up with your "bolt"
