I own a 2008 SMART (Florida, USA) and have had my car to the dealer 4 times to correct malfunctions of the transmission. The last visit to the shop SEEMS to have done the trick. I often drive in the manual mode for the better performance, but in automatic when I'm feeling calm and happy.
If you want to read other owner complaints, visit <451series.com>. The consensus there is that it's the clutch system, including the clutch pressure plate. Replacement seems to cure these transient shifting problems.
