smart Car
I was looking through forums on here...it seems everyone has had simular problem..
When selecting the R gear it shows N and it flashes...I have to either push my smart 451 - yr 2009 or I have to turn off and on and off and on..until it works again..
Had my car at the Mercedes Dealer for 1 week.. The problem went away, however after 2 month it happend again. Instead of selecting R it shows N and it flashes.. so again I was pushing the car.
HOW embarresing..and frustrating..
Anyway, took my smart again into Mercedes Dealer, it took them only few minutes, and they couldn't find the "ERROR" I am running out of Warranty as of November 2011...
Any feedback guys? I am just concerned this will happen over and over again..

Hi I have the same problem. I bought my Smart used with a semi warranty( some things covered) What I do is put it in drive, go forward an inch then it will shift into reverse every time. I also found that the hotter out it gets, the more it won't show reverse on the dash. I live in western NYS. When the temp gets about 65 degrees out and below, it works beautiful. I feel its the computer board itself is warping during the heat and not making contact. Nothing is wrong with my shifter or transmission. I went from a BMW X5 to the Smart and just love it. Hope this helps because from my research many have had lot of parts replaced and end up back with the same problem. Replacing the board probably won't work as its the same material. I have been thinking on how to keep the board stiffer as I have repaired many computers. If I find a solution I will post it for everyone. Sallie

I agree with Sallie about moving fwd an inch then reversing again.
Also you should make sure the brake is fully pressed and the car is completely stopped before you engage R.

Thanks Ian for all the tips; the problem seems to be on all MHDs uphill...
I will follow your advise and switch mhd off when uphill...
And yes stick shift driving is a completely different world, i agree ;)
