honest article, considering the source, they expect every car to be a ferrari, when it's not, they bitch and moan. and of course, driving a smart like a ferrari, they get 32mpg, which i have never seen. my first tank was 37mpg and only got better, up to 46mpg, so far, and i'm waiting for the day when i can get it out on the highway and run it in a long legged mode.
being 5'8", i set the front seat forward a bit more and can get even more stuff inside, especially when i'm alone, then i set the passenger seat even farther forward, which opens up a world of room in the back. i started subscribing to C&D in '75, my first job was pumping gas in '76. cars were always a first love of mine, and i know all about the C&D writers and their mentality. so i can understand their "errand boy" status for the smart. i've lived with my smart for 3 months now and have no regrets for the purchase. it still amazes and amuses others who see it for the first time (which happens everyday). i get 40+mpg in my daily commutes and look forward to 50+mpg on actual highway "road trips". i never feel "intimidated" in the smart, i just worry when idiots ride my ass too closely (i wish this had a larger rear bumper, or any rear bumper!) maybe i'll fabricate a tube in the back with a visual "sight" and maybe a red flashing LED. (it would be nicer if the rear window would open by itself when underway, then i could turn around and flash the one finger salute or a gun at the offending tailgater) some geek store has an LED thingy i'll have to get that does this function for $30... see attached photo...
