I JUST PURCHASED A THORLEY SYSTEM. DO YOU REALLY HAVE TO REMOVE THE REAR VALANCE TO INSTALL? AND CAN STANDARD WRENCHES MAKE DO INSTEAD OF E-TORQUES?

Reply to This

Yes, you have to remove the valence and no, standard wrenches won't take the place of the e-torque. I installed a Thorley exhaust and while the performance gain was worth it, I would strongly recommend that you have access to a hoist to get it off the ground and that you be very careful in the suggested removal of the cat converter heat shield. There are no pictures with thorley's instructions and access to the fasteners are a real puzzle.

As for K&N, they have a replacement filter. Just to to their web site. Be sure to clean and oil the K&N at least every 1,000 miles to maintain the performance gain. They clog up quickly

I just received my Thorley system from smart Roundrock in Texas. I installed it myself in less than 15 minutes. Read the instructions from Thorley, get the proper Torx sockets and tear into it. I did NOT unhook the battery aas suggested. No reason to do so, at least from my experience. And boy, that sweet sound and more power (dyno 6 hp) makes a huge difference. It's the cheapest horsepower increase I can think of.

No way you did this in 15 minutes unless you've got a torch or a cutter to remove the "mushrooms" from the ends of the stock muffler supports and destroyed the stock muffler.

No torch. No cutter. No hassle. Jeeez, there are only three bolts and I had the proper tools and I've been installing systems on Mini Cooper (the real ones) for years.

ummm, K&N does make a filter for the smart, part # E-9257, they don't make a custom intake for it yet, probably not worth the effort, there's no room for one! there is an open system intake on sale in UK, looks kinda funky and is supposed to be louder than the exhaust on acceleration.

thorely made an install video on youtube recently, i just wish they'd show how to take off the rear body panel. let us know if your fuel economy goes up!

K&N filter number E-9257 dose not fit Smart 451. Stay away for ordering it.
