A/C control mysterious "Third Eye" - 451 smart fortwo

451 smart fortwo

Ok, I admit it. I am stumped. If you look at the "Air Distribution Control Knob" (---- anyone want to bet or confirm that in German that is all one word? hehehehe), there is, at the bottom, a little "eye" or lense looking thingy.

I have pored over the owners manual, but I can find no explanation for this item. I initially thought it would be some sort of light that would let me know when the a/c compressor was cycling on and off, but no, that's not it. Is it an internal air tempertaure sensor to tell the compressor when to cycle on and off, perhaps?

Maybe it is a hidden camera so "they" can start watching me again! Now where did I put my medication this morning? (JOKE!) Or is it possible that our German car with a Japanese engine all put together in France also contains a Buddhist dimension?

Anyway, any insight (no pun intened) that may solve this mystery is appreciated. I'm not losing sleep over this mystery ....yet. ;-)

OK i am going to the dealership right now
well i did find there is a motion sensor somewhere in the car yesterday. i had my smart on exhibit at the local car show, set the alarm and left my digital camera on the passenger seat, 20 minutes later i reached inside to retrieve it and all hell broke loose! (i've had this car since january and never had that happen before!) i hit the panic button on my key and it got worse! then i hit the open button and peace was restored. ROTFLMFAO!

Mission failed, shop foreman didn't give me a clear answer, I will try again on Saturday. about the parts, fail to log in to the site, someone is on it other can no log in, I can find out if those 2 vents you were talking about if they are motion sensors, I can find the parts around the dome light and see what it reads, only parts department can get access to the site, which I found it not efficient, but the part you were talking about takes about a week, a PDI technician just replace that part, she didn't know the part number of the price, but she said it took her a week to get that part, I really want to have a log in, I can't believe only 1 can log in at a time. As for that "third eye" I ask if it is a sun senor the shop foreman said it should not that fancy of a car to have that. That shocked me...the Smart car brakes system are wonderful, I am not sure if Benz even have it, the system work the same on Honda's Prelude the "Super Handling" system, putting more brake force on the inner wheel, to give a smoother cornering, it really works as I test drove it and made a 90 degree turn at 35 mph, I don't feel like it will flip over, and the tires did not slip or skip no sound just a smooth turn, very impressive, also I don't think Benz has motion sensor in them...to me is a fancy car tight in small package, Smart car is not a simple car. I feel ashame for being unable to get the answer for you right now, he said he will call me back when he got the answer, the technician went home early, see what will they say on Monday, I would say the technician are more friendly, or...more talkative than the shop foreman.

my only experience with ESP was in snow in my parking lot. i drive almost like a maniac, i take most expressway entrance/exit ramps at 50% over posted limits, a few days ago i was leaving I-94 for I-55 and had a semi on my butt for miles, after a few hundred feet into the exit, he was gone from my rear view mirror and a couple seconds he was way back. (i was on the tail of a highly modified camaro for 100 miles running in the first stage of the cannonball run)

for what it's worth, i'm ready to pull fuse 11 on my smart (ESP/ABS), smartster disabled his for his "cannonball run". i think i'm a bit smarter than the smart. the smart needs slightly wider front tires. this car would fly on 195/50-15s all around (they require 5.5 inch wheels)

the smart, even though looking tall, has all it's weight very low and mostly on the rear tires, 195's would make a de-ABS/ESP smart a super go-cart capable of maybe 1+G cornering. smartster got .798 Gs on his slightly modified smart, i'm not sure if he was pushing it or driving it to his comfort level.

And the topic of this discussion is ...? I go away for a couple of days (driving the smart car, of course) and I come back and we are far afield from our quest. I just checked and the "third eye" in my smart is weeping and feeling neglected! hehehehehe

BTW, While the infra-red driver body heat sensor is an intriguing possible solution for the quest, the third eye could also be a hidden video camera to capture the in flagrante delicto antics suggested by Andrea and admitted to by others! (See recent discussions, if you dare!) I can see the DVD cover now:

I got answers from an technician

is an unsure answer
he said maybe sun sensor

and about the vents near the dome light
he said it should be a temp sensor it has a small fan to suck air in then get the air temp
from just looking at it, that is how benz's temp sensor look like

have to read the wiring diagram

technician and shop foreman still learning about the smart car
they start to have training programs online

hope I get a hold of an account if I can

According to service manager at smart center Bloomfield this is the internal tempertaure sensor for the climate control.

Internal where ?

The Third Eye is the internal temperature sensor for the climate control. I assume it is infrared but I am not sure of that.

Yes. It could operate like one of those hand held thermometers with the laser pointer, but without the laser. Could be a good system.
