Here's something I'd like to know more about:

What's offered is a reflash for both the ECM and the TCM for $550. If anyone has actual personal experience with this service, your opinions about how well it works would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Do sheep have electric dreams?

It troubled me that DPtunes dyno chart is labeled in French taxable HP (CV's, or 7 US HP per CV), but the Horsepower output (Green curve) is given in SAE HP (71). The Red curve represents - what? Now I'm totally confused.

If Paisani is an Italian company, then why is the chart in French?

You may well be right about the . . .Bull.

Only company in the WORLD , surely DPTune should look at other Piasini partners as they can offer this !!

Well, ok sorry, the we in that statement was refering to Piasini. DPT is the only company in the united states, better?

CV in this case is is the Itialian rating for HP not the french cv

From Wikipedia,
"In Italian (Cavalli), Spanish (Caballos), and Portuguese (Cavalos), CV is the equivalent to the German, PS""1 PS = 75 kilopond-meters per second
(75 kp·m/s)×(9.80665 N/kp) = 735.49875 N·m/s ≈ 735.5 N·m/s ≈ 735.5 W ≈ 0.7355 kW ≈ 0.98632 hp (SAE)

The chart you see was done at one of the european partners, I sorry we just did not have one from our dyno to list. However this is a us 451 that was the test mule for Piasini. Hope this clears up the confusion!

Thank you for the explanation and math. I was familiar only with the French usage for "CV", which equaled 7 SAE Horsepower for tax purposes. For example, the French "Deux Chevaux" had 14 SAE HP, which is why it was known as the Deux Chevaux, or "2 Horsepower" Citroen. My Volvo 544 had 85 SAE HP, which became approximately 12 CV for tax purposes.

All this aside, it looks like your chart is showing the dyno results for the unmodified Smart 451, and the red line is not explained. What is the point of showing the dyno output of the unmodified Smart without including the modified output after reprogramming the engine and transmission?

Your reply would be appreciated.

Well, the simple answer is; what you see in that chart is a tuned verses a non tuned 451. With the green line representing the tuned ecu and the red is the stock maping. Why the low numbers, you ask? Well this is a true dyno chart showing the whp of the smart 1.0 N/A. The stock hp is rated at 71 at the crankshaft, and with driveline losses in the 12-14% range this is the whp in real life.

These are real world LOAD CELL DYNO runs done on a roto-tronics hub dyno

Hope this helps answer your question.

Thank you for the additional data. So, the area between the Red line and the Green line represents additional power going to the crankshaft (ot rear wheels?) There seems to be some conflict between methodologies, or so it looks from the descriptions.

The term you use when describing the Dyno is unfamiliar to me. How are you actually connecting the dyno to the engine's output - at the reat wheels via rollers, or at the crankshaft directly (engine out of car)?

Thank you.

Herb, in this case the lower(red line) represents the un tuned output at the wheels, and the green line is the same except tuned. These would both be whp(wheel HorsePower, or in this case CV)

The dynos we use( as is the case with just about all tuning shops) are load cell dynos. There are several types on the market now. We use hydraulic units from Dynapack in our shop. This unit is directly coupled to the hubs on the car. This removes the slip, and tire growth issues in testing.

Most of the dyno sheets you see on the internet are in inertia readings, done on roller type dynos. While the roller dyno is good for someone with a regular size car, they do not work well on the smart due to the low mass of the chassis and driveline.

The above link is a good overview of the different types of dynos.

Hope this helps

I greatly appreciate the fact that you've stuck with me through all my questions. You have answered all of them to my satisfaction. I have just one question left: How do I go about getting my 451's software upgraded? I live just north of Tampa.

Regards, Herb
I have a question, can this remapping be done via my laptop and the OBDII port or do we have to remove the ECU and send it in and be without transportation? I also ask because I would also like the ability to revert back to stock if I ever had to take the car in for warranty service or something.

Just got a ticket because my Solo Exhaust was too loud. I don't even have after market headers. So, consider this a second opinion. Definitely, too loud.
