451 smart fortwo

I left the ignition on to tow my Smart Car a short way on a car dolly. Do not do this with the windows up. The doors automatically lock!

It took me two hours to figure out how to get in without damaging the car. I will not publish the method here but established members of 451s.com can PM me for the technique.

LOL, sorry, learn something new everyday, if you're not careful! probably the 10mph "auto-lock" feature kicked in. i've found the only other way (so far) to lock the keys in the car is by locking the doors from the outside and tossing the keys through a slightly open window.

i would like to know how to unlock a smart with keys inside. i'm doing a "park and fly" for christmas, on monday and would be nice to know i can lock a set of keys in the car, just in case i lose a set while travelling. damn! i just thought of a way to do this! don't lock the keys IN the car... stow a set under the "hood"! whole crap load of room under there! (genius fueled by beer!) damn i'm good!

thanks for the mental "poke"!

i used to have a geo metro, and would lock a set of keys in the car, carry house and car keys in my wallet, just in case i lost the other set while travelling, smart keys are an arm and a leg to get spares made, and are LARGE (not wallet friendly).

most people don't know CRAP about smart cars, electric? gas? hybrid? where's the engine? what IS under the "hood"? (most ppl assume the engine is in the front! i mess with ppl and remove the hood and say "damn! the engine was there last week!") a little plastic box with velcro, put anywhere under the hood to hold a set of keys works! just place it there before you go to the airport, then if you lose your keys during your travels, you can still get home!

i hope this helps other smarties in the future :)

i was going thru my wallet yesterday at work, sorta "pre trip" prep (it's been 2-1/2 years since my last flight) and found a key for my old mercedes E-class car i sold 2 years ago! (the previous owner was more "anal" than i, and i received 10 keys for that car when i bought it!)

thinking things over a little more this morning, why even mess with a little box? use a zip "wire tie" and tie the key ring to something under the hood. when you get home from your trip, just snip your spare set free... these ties can be bought for $2.00 for 100 in most hardware stores... (my job has them for "free", i used a bunch to wire my co-worker's x-mas tree lights to our work area) i just keep getting smarter, just can't help it!

to prevent "auto-lock" from happening next time, leave the rear window "ajar", it prevents the car from locking. the smart car is very "anal", open it and don't slap it down tight, just push it to near closed position. this prevents the "auto-lock" system from working as well. i'm a fount of useless "smart" knowledge! LOL

Well for what its worth and knowledge being golden, you are welcomed to share the door unlocking technique with me. My wife has managed on complete accident on 2 occasions to securely lock the keys to one of our other cars inside, with the engine running. I am no fan of the 'hide-a-key" boxes.
Thanks

maybe you should invest in secondary keys or a divorce. i couldn't lock the doors inside a smart with the keys, couldn't set off the alarm inside it either. i'd choose the latter. my wife is a stupid bitch and i sent her on her way back to russia, where she now resides at -10F.

if your wife isn't good in bed, invest in a divorce, nothing is worse in life than a dumb f@ck!

you seem like a two time loser, you have to change something T

LOL! You guys are just too funny! What a group!

Anyway, I know my wife's Benz C230K (2002 model) has the auto-lock feature, but I've NEVER heard my 451 Smart locking the doors as I (very gently!) accelerate past 5mph. ! Am I getting deaf(er)? Is this really happening? Senility setting in? I'm going to have to try the "throw your keys in through a slightly open window" trick. That ought to be entertaining when I'm desperately trying to get away from a mugger at 3 AM in the morning! Maybe I'll just buy a bigger gun. I really can't "Give 'em the Warks wif a Wabely" when the Webley is just a .25! After all, I DO live near TAMPA, crime capital of the planet. I really don't want to become the subject of the local TV station's "Crime of the morning, afternoon, or evening" show.

So, is there a REAL solution to locking oneself out of one's Smart 451? Some way to disable this feature? I see that the lock position under the door handle outside has a black plastic plug in place of a real keyhole and real lock. Why can't some bright money-grubber come up with a solution that simply involves putting a real lock in that position? A simple key could be put on any key chain - no need to carry the complex, expensive, Smart key on a keychain, no? Just a passing thought! (maybe it's only gas).

my smart locks faithfully @ 10mph with an audible click, unless the back window isn't shut properly. what's funny is in the summer, with the windows down and the rear isn't shut, it will fly open.

as for the plug, it is a real lock, just in case the battery in your remote dies.

Och, Mon! Now you're going to make me trot down to the Ga-rodge to test your statement that there's an actual keyhole in the door!!

Ho HO ho.... Nice! Very nice. What I would love is a dusting of snow in Central Florida. I'm certain the chances are ever so slim. Merry Christmas to you and yours. Thanks for sharing the spirit.!

Dealer just told me that there is a leak in the vacuum for the fuel tank on my 2008 451 Smart ForTwo as well as a physical leak. The service rep said other cars had this issue. Cost me $1300. Shouldn't this be a recall? These guys need to get their…

Well, yes and no. I'd like to address several misconceptions in the posting from ceejay 2005. 1.- Yes, the plastic laminate holds much of the windshield fragments together, but is actually a mortal danger to unsecured occupants in the car when thei…
