Engineers Create Human-Powered Flapping Aircraft

It's called an ornithopter, and it is the very first of its kind -- a human-powered flying machine that can sustain continuous flight just by flapping its wings.

The people behind it, those clever folks at the University of Toronto Institute for Aerospace Studies, tell us that it flew in the air for 19.3 seconds, over 475 feet, making its average speed around 16 mph.

Called the "Snowbird," it is final proof that Leonardo Da Vinci's idea for solely-human-powered flight can exist -- and look pretty damn cool too.

The lucky guy who got to fly the Snowbird, engineering PhD student Todd Reichert, had to lose 18 pounds to fly in the contraption, which weighed in itself at just 94 pounds. Very impressive, considering its wingspan is a whopping 105 feet wide.

Diesel engine? Don't expect them for many years... I talked to someone at M-B, he told me that it's a regulation problem with Transport Canada. Every time they want to introduce a new engine, they must re-homologate the entire car, not only the engi…
