I am a smart car owner bought in 11/2007. I live in Greece and the car was bought from Germany 2nd hand.
The problem is that many times it won't go into reverse, then the N Neutral sign starts blinking and even sometines I cannot put it also into A (Automatic drive). This is solved only if I switch off and then on the car.
The guarantee here in greece has changed the transmission clutch and disc ( i do not know if I am saying it correctly) but the problem insists.
I would try lubing the shifter mechanism. Go to www.smartcarofamerica.com and do a search on this topic. It will probably direct you to Evolution.com. and there will be a tutorial on how to do this yourself. The trick is to remove the shifter knob. Basically, you have to turn the collar under the shifter knob counterclockwise and lift off the shifter. You can then lube the mechanism with a silicone grease and put the knob back on. However, you vehicle probably has a different shifter then USA versions of the smart so the procedure might be different.
