451 smart fortwo

I know the smart received very good crash safety ratings. However, did they test the Cabriolet? I wonder if it is as safe as the Passion/Pure, as they had to cut into the tridion in order to make it a convertible. The question came to my mind after the story on a smart forum about a smart owner whose car rolled 3 times after being hit at 70 mph on the freeway, and he opened the door and walked away. Would the Cabriolet perform as well?

In a rollover? No, of course not. You have less protection. Wear a helmet.

Disagree - you might lose the hair off your scalp if the top is down, but we (cabrio owners) have the obvious roll bar in back, AND another rollbar around the windshield. I know this is an ancient thread, but I wanted to post this pic for anyone who might search for such info in the future. Note the yellow roll bar in the cut out of the windshield surround. Since the seat belt will clinch you in a death grip, it should keep you from dropping even while upside down, and at 6' tall my head is not as high as the roll bars, so I felt much better when a friend pointed me towards this pic on SCOA. (Thanks BB!)

Yeah? What if you roll over on a fire hydrant?

Dude, seriously?

No. Seriously, I'd think you would be better protected in a Smart convertible than in most cars.

May 29th my wife and I were in a 2000 Jaguar XK8 and as I was passing a lady and a truck in front of her she decided to pass the truck too but without looking into her outside mirror. I was going no faster than 40 mph. I moved to the left and my left rear tire caught the soft shoulder and over-steer to the right. I corrected and the car started to go straight then over-steer to the left and into a ditch we went. We flipped back over front then rolled 3 times.

Where that yellow bar is is the "A" pillar. That was fine, but where that cross member is from driver's side to passenger's side was crushed down causing an 8" long, 1" wide non-ink tattoo in my scalp.

I too have a Carbio and I've thought about what would happen in the same accident. I hope that cross member is as strong as that reinforced "A" pillar in the smart. The roll bar is fine, but in my case, the rear part of the roof was okay, just the rear window shattered.

The rear roll bar will help to keep the whole car from coming down on your and I hope the cross member above the windshield is as strongs as the "A" piller and doen't collaps down towards the driver as it did in the Jaguar.

I have a similar problem with 2008 PassionForTwo, which has occurred four times in the 28 months and 13K miles of ownership. I'm happily driving along until I reach my destination, then I need to go into Reverse to park. The shifter works flawlessly…
