Has anyone had the problem of their transmission not going into reverse? It has happened with mine six times now. The display does not indicate any letter for the gear and the transmission is not in gear. Sometimes the display indicates "N" instead of "R" and it is still not in gear. Sometimes, it does this in "D" also. If I let it sit when it is indicating "N" instead of "R", an alarm starts sounding. Any help?

Forsure its got to go to the Dealer... Well we have all read about Smart's with bad clutchs that act like what your saying... What year is that Smart... Bad clutches have been being updated with a New improved Clutch Disk... Each Smart that is sold comes with its vary own Gremlin...!!!...No Extra Charge...<:-((
Mine always reads R, but takes a few seconds before the transmission will engage. Sounds like I'm on my way to the dealership. Happens at least once a week. I've had my smart 13 months and have only 5,500 miles. I wonder if it's related at all to the transmission chip upgrade that was done a few months back.
When I first took delivery of my '08 Passion Coupe, it was difficult to get into reverse. A trip to the dealership service department where they disassembled the shifter and lubed it, corrected the concern. It has worked perfectly ever since.

I took the smart in to the dealer to have the transmission looked at. They said they were aware of the problem and the fix. The shifter was lubricated and given back to me. I drove it home, about 30 miles and it was OK for a couple days. At that time, the same problem appeared in the morning and again at night. Another appointment, and another drive to the dealer. This time, they replaced the clutch plate and so far, it appears to be working. I have tried, without breaking, to see if it does not go into "R" and so far, it works correctly, every time. The dealer I have is Mercedes Benz of Lindin, Utah. I am very happy with their service department.
Lubing the shifter was the lazy fix. They should have known it was the clutch plate and done that the first time.
I've been dealing with this exact problem for over a year with my 2008 Smart. The dealer (San Francisco) has been very nice but they keep doing the bare minimum --- lubing, new shift knob (which kept coming off in my hand) etc. They keep saying they just don't know what it could be unless it happens when they have it one the lot. It's going back in for the 6th time tomorrow and I am going to request the new improved clutch disc since this seems to be the cure --- from reading the other posts. This is not only annoying but DANGEROUS. I have had it happen in the middle of a very busy street while parallel parking. I was stuck half in and half out of the street. Terrifying. I hope to be able to post that this has been corrected or my Smart dealer might see me screaming in the showroom sometime very soon. I love this car for its SIZE not how it DRIVES.
Just had my car in for a cruise control upgrade and new chrome bumper guards. Drove home, went to parallel park and the car could not find reverse. Turned car off, restarted, then worked fine. Later, same thing happened again. I see you had this problem in September. Any luck. What have you found out?
Funny you should ask as it is in the shop right now. It has been in the shop 4 times in the last 3 months and my San Francisco dealership cannot find what is wrong. Mine is a 2008 Smart for 2. I think there are many more problems with the 08 then later models. Next stop is to take it up the chain of command. Smart needs to deal with this. My car has only 12K miles on it with an extended warranty. If I had known that my dealer would not be able to fix this I would have applied for protection under the CA Lemon Law. Too late now as it runs out after 18 months. I would love to know if anyone has had this successfully fixed.
Sounds like the dealer likes getting warranty paid everytime you take it in, and they don't fix it... Take it to a different dealer...
OR
You have to tell them you want to talk to the ZONE Guy about the problem, and then it WILL BE FIXED...YUP
Just got off the 800 number and they referred me to the Zone Guy. My frustrations are legion with my dealer. They cannot "verify" the problem unless they physically "see it". Doesn't matter that I have seen it nearly 30 times. That does not count. I am HATING this process. I am not a good PR person for Smart Car at this time Grrrrrrrrrrrr!
I have had the exact same problem with my 2008 cabriolet. Dealership supposedly changed the shift box. For a couple of days it was okay, but since then, it is happening all the time everytime I have to put it in reverse. Sometimes it won't go into any gear. I'll inquire about the clutch plate and see if the dealership knows anything about it. How can I get the 800 number and who is the Zone guy?
