fyi, recently the engine malfunction light came on on the dash. It seems a pollution control valve is sticking with some of the smarts. the dealership picked me up, replaced it and delivered the car back to me at no charge.
Triangle (Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill) smart Owners' Club Breakfast Meet - Sat Jul 26, 8-10a (or until we're tired of chatting) @ Brier Creek Commons (US-70 & I-540 in Raleigh) in the Camille's Sidewalk Cafe parking lot. "Convoy/parade" opportunity afterwards, for those interested? Delete Comment
Me and my wife just reserved ours last night...might have to wait 14-18 months, but hey, it will be well worth it.
We ordered the Cabriolet in white/black. Cannot wait til we get it.
And I tell ya what, the salesmen at the South Charlotte location, very nice and helpful. Let us know if anyone will be down in Charlotte (or live in the area) so we can get a group going and make it a monthly thing.
I first saw a smart in Europe in 2005 (my first trip out of the country). Ever since, I was hoping to get my hands on one. I took delivery of mine on this past Monday (23-Jun) and it's great. The red/orange and black frame. The bad part is that I have to get the windshield replaced today (it hasn't even been 3 whole days yet!). I picked mine up from Smart Center Charlotte. Great guys, very helpful. Easiest car buying experience ever for me.
And yesterday, I found out someone I work with picked his up as well. They are starting to show up all over the place here. :)
The other car club I am in alternates where they meet from a place here in Charlotte and a place in Raleigh. We could set up the same thing... Just a thought...
Count me in for anything in Charlotte. I just heard from Matt today and he agreed to keep me posted if the event on July 12 unfolds. I offered to help with anything needed. If I do hear anything I'll post it in the smart Events section with a reply here.
If you want to to try to win one, there is non-profit in MI that is raffling off a SmartCar; as of 6/30/08 there were rafle tickets available: The raffle is in August, is licensed by the state, and you do not need to be present to win, but the raffle is in MI.
I emailed them to validate and Aimee responded:
"Yes, we do still have raffle tickets available. Here is the link to order them online. http://www.cdhh.org/khxc/index.php?app=ccp0&ns=prodshow&ref...
Please let me know if you have any other questions or if the link does not work.
Thank you,

Matt and Ken (@Smart Center South Charlotte) are great. Even when working with them after I picked mine up Monday, they have been helpful with answering a few questions I had, and are great about responding to e-mails. When I picked mine up, they were great with getting the paperwork done quickly, and it wasn't like other dealerships. No tacked-on fees, and no crap. Basically, the price I was quoted from the web site when I reserved mine plus tax (3%), title ($40), tag ($28), and the few additional items I picked up when I took delivery is all they charged me.
The downside is having picked it up Monday, and a rock to the windshield on Wednesday left a nice long crack in it's wake. Even the aftermarket places don't have the glass available (Safelite, PPG, Glass Masters, etc.all sent me back to the dealer), so it has to come from MB, and even they have a week+ wait for it. And it's not cheap. $611 since you also have to replace the rain sensor with it (If you got one with the automatic wipers).
I agree that Matt and Ken are great here in Charlotte. The service manager, Nick, is also up in the ranks. I had my windows tinted and they did a great job. Event the price was not as high as I thought it was going to be.
Does anyone know about a Smart Car event on July 12 at the Charlotte dealership yet?
I have to say that the people I have dealt with at South Charlotte were great in person, but have been very slack in answering emails. Ben is very nice and well informed and a great salesman, but when trying to contact either him or Matteo, have yet to have a reply even a month later.
Also, just a picky thing since I know they need to make a profit, but I am very annoyed by their method of selling off orphans. I know they sell them with all the items added, but I could never justify getting one after they add about $10,000 in extras. $25,000+ for a smart car seems a bit steep, even considering how funky/cool/unique/ingenious it is!
Anyway, I'm scheduled for 9/09-11/09 delivery and have placed myself on a wait list at the Winston Salem dealer (since they respond immediately on both phone and email and do not tack on any extras to their orphans).
It's time to move on. I've deleted my posts and never to return.
I wish the Smart Madness Team and the Smart Car Community an Excellent New Year!!
