2010 DIESEL... US? - 451 smart fortwo

PRESS RELEASE:

smart fortwo cdi: 21 percent more power for the CO2 champion

Stuttgart – For model year 2010 the smart fortwo cdi has been given a clear power boost, yet it remains just as economical and environmentally friendly as before. In future the state-of-the-art three-cylinder diesel engine will produce 21 percent more power and deliver approximately 18 percent more maximum torque. Although this extra power makes the popular two-seater car noticeably livelier, it does not affect its exemplary fuel consumption. As before, it consumes just 3.4 litres of diesel per 100 kilometres (NEDC). Furthermore, with CO2 emissions of 88 g/km it continues to assert its leading position as the CO2 champion. In addition, from model year 2010 all versions of the smart fortwo including the BRABUS variants will comply with the strict emission limits of the EU5 standard.

The smart fortwo enjoys the worldwide reputation of a car that is perfect for the times we live in. Thanks to its unique concept it takes up minimum road and parking space, boasts low fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions and combines mobility, ecology and joie de vivre in a unique way. For the new model year smart is uncompromisingly continuing its philosophy and making the smart fortwo even more environmentally friendly and attractive.

The most important change: the smart fortwo cdi with a length of 2.69 metres is redefining economy and driving fun. Its reengineered diesel engine now has an output of 40 kW/54 hp – seven kW or 21 percent more than its predecessor. Moreover, the new three-cylinder engine delivers maximum torque of 130 Newton metres (an increase of 18 percent). This makes the car that is brimming with lifestyle appeal even more agile and fun to drive. Thanks to the power boost it now sprints from 0 - 100 km/h in just 16.8 seconds. However, the increased liveliness does not affect the outstanding fuel consumption and emission figures of the trendy two-seater car. The combined fuel consumption still stands at 3.4 litres per 100 kilometres and the extremely low CO2 emissions of just 88 g/km mean that the smart fortwo cdi is still the CO2 world champion among all production cars with combustion engines.

The 21 percent power increase is primarily realised through modified pistons in conjunction with adjusted injection and charge pressure parameters. Furthermore, thanks to the increased torque it was also possible to lengthen the gear ratios of the third and fourth gears by ten and eleven percent respectively, and to lower the shifting points in the automatic programme. This reduces the rpm level in speed ranges used particularly frequently – with benefits in terms of fuel consumption and noise level. The smart fortwo cdi is equipped with a closed diesel particulate filter and emissions are below the limit values laid down in the EU5 standard.

Thanks to optimised engine and transmission management the petrol models of the popular two-seater car also comply with the demanding EU5 exhaust gas standard. Not only does this help the environment – in many countries it entails clear tax advantages.

New contrast components in shiny pearl black, which further upgrade the interior of the smart fortwo, and a new folding armrest available as an option, provide for increased comfort.

Further optional equipment includes the smart hands-free system with a colour display and extensive multimedia functions. It features the sassy design typical of the brand, a Bluetooth® interface, voice control and optional iPod® connection and is perfectly integrated in the vehicle electronics and the audio system. It is simple and safe to operate via a wireless controller on the centre console.

All updated smart fortwo variants can be ordered now. The prices for the petrol models are unchanged. In future the 40 kW/54 hp smart fortwo cdi will cost €11 790 as a coupé in the pure equipment line (German price incl. VAT).

In Europe they changed the cdi again, by lowering the suspension with 0.7cm to get 86 gram CO2 emissions. (3 grams lower) The reason was because of the launch of the VW Polo 1.2 diesel, which has 87 gram CO2. (but is a bigger car of course!)

Now that is strange because this very morning 12/02/2010 i was looking at the specification of the new far more expensive Polo Bluemotion and yep they trounced the Smart with their lower CO2 emissions of 87.

I would like to know where you found out this very interesting information as it must be fresh off the Mercedes press.

Thismorning was a very special day in my life because i took delivery of a brandnew ForTwo CDI Passion in Black and Silver Tridon.
I first read about this car way back in January 2000 in the Diesel Car magazine available here in the Uk and always dreamed of owning one.

Right Hand drive examples didnot reach the Uk until March 2009 but the wait was worth it.

Now ignore all the articles or videos you will read or see about the CDi engine being noisy, it certainly is not.

I collected mine from a dealership over 200 miles from my home because of the incredible discount i was given

Naturally the gear ratios are different on the diesel to the petrol so the engine behaved differently, but with an engine with less than ten miles on the clock and a top speed of around 85 it felt extreamly refined.

This may have had something to do with it being the all new 54Hp engine with new pistons and greatly increased injection pressure.

Hand on my heart the engine was hardly audible and believe it or not it is as quiet as a petrol or gas engine.

Starting the engine from cold there is quite a throaty roar saying this is a diesel but when it has warmed up the engine is very quiet indeed.

It was so quiet that i was able to hold a conversation with a friend who had made the journey with me and listen to the simply superb Pioneer Sat/Nav that is now standard on Passion models.

In the Uk the Smart Passion Cdi is not a cheap car, costing over £10,000 new but the air of quality from everything down to the trim, that gorgeous CDi engine and the top notch Pioneer Sat/Nav make it money well spent.

I bought mine of an internet dealer who got me just over a £1000 off list price so i felt pretty satisfied.

I did feel some sadness though in trading in my cherished Citroen C1 diesel which had provided me trouble free motoring for nearly three years.

I will have fond memories of that little car but being owner of my dream Smart Cdi has left me with only good memories.

I bought mine off Parkgate Motors Ltd based in Darlington.

I did a search on the Tiscali site of Smart ForTwo cars and at the time he was getting 2009 59reg Cdi for £8995 and advertising brandnew 2010 Smart Passion Cdi for £9200.

All cars are brandnew dealer supplied vehicles, mine had only 8 miles on the clock and was under wrapps in the showroom when i collected it.

He deals directly with the Mercedes dealership on Concorde Way Stockton on Tees where last Thursday i picked up my dream car, a black and silver Passion Cdi.

I gave my low mileage Citroen C1 diesel in p/x.

He will require a £500 deposit and last time of checking is able to get a discount of nearly £700 off list price.

I could have had a factory ordered car to my specification but would have had to wait until the begining of May, but still on checking my new Continental tyres on the car they are new this month with 3/10 stamped on them.

Mr Steven Dodgson is the owner of the company and if you want a new Smart Cdi Passion he comes highly recommended.

Blimey the new 54Hp engine is a gorgeous sounding unit and crusing down the M6 last Thursday it is extreamly quiet for a diesel.

Would i deal with Parkgate Motors again A DEFINATE YES EXTREAMLY FRIENDLY AND TRUSTWORTHY.

tell me why would the us put something in the market that gets 70mpg unless its a motorcycle

Find out who is doing this to us, please, and tell the rest of us so we can boycott whatever the ba$tard is $elling.

Funny, neither of my 1200cc Suzuki Bandits get more than a tad over 51 mpg (this is the newer 1255cc model).

I'd LOVE to own the new TDI Smart and get the kind of speed and power these buggies can deliver without breaking the fuel budget. I was convinced that diesels were to go after driving rental VW Golf TDI's in Europe years ago (these were the 1900cc version). They could be driven flat-out on the Autobahn all day and still deliver 43 mpg.

I've been told that this car is capable of 57 mpg when driven rationally. Back then, diesel went for 20 pfennig less than the regular "sprit" as well, so I didn't care about saving on fuel. .
