If I don't drive my smartcar cabriolet for 2 days the battery is dead. This has happen 3 times. I took it to the dealer and everything tested fine. They had me disconnect my scangauge and that solved the problem. Has anyone else had this trouble? I am going to investigate the power draw with and without the scangauge plugged in. The scangauge goes to sleep after I shut off my car. The light goes out and all seems good. I don't understand how a little gauge like this could drain my battery.

MrB, you had the air bag in your car NON-functioning for a week! due to their inability to reconnect it. Does that make you feel safe letting them even check the air in your tires? Specialists... MY ARSE! could you even imagine the law suit you could have won against Merc, if you had been injured in an accident and that airbag not deploied....OMG!

i was very much afraid for that week, but i knew it was side airbags, due to the repair process. but i have driven 22 years without any airbags. but i have only been rear-ended, so far... i work second shift and drive home at midnight, i am cautious at intersections while going home.

Same thing happened to me and my mother-in-law's Smart on Sunday. I was out of town for 7 days, she 4 days. Both cars would not start. Road assistance was dispatched and jumped. Cars then started. Sure is a hassle to get to the battery. I left my Cabrio for a week in June and it started without a problem. However, this time it was very cold and the battery sits almost on the ground. Could it be the cold? Perhaps the USA batteries are too weak or not enough cranking amps? The driver from roadside assistance said he has jumped several Smarts lately. BTW, what is a scangauge?

CJ the Scan Gauge is a code reader as well as a monitor of various info from your cars computer system. It plugs into any cars OBDII port. http://www.scangauge.com/ Alot of us have one to monitor MPG, RPM.. even Horsepower.

Out of town again for 3 days. I come home and my battery is dead. Flatbeding it to the dealer this time.

there is a battery recall for smarts with the comfort package as the original has an amp rating that is way to weak. and while at it they will flash your transmission to upgrade the software to 09. that will give you the ability to down shift with the paddles even in AUTO mode.

Thanks for the info.
The dealership called today and confirmed that the battery is not strong enough and they will order a new updated battery.

#1. Battery recall on early '08's?

#2. Radio does NOT come on on either my '08 nor my '09 when I start the car. '08 is basic radio, '09 is upgrade sound sys.

Both cars have comfort pkg., neither has had batt issue.

That 'downshift from paddles' thing is cool, but my wife hates it...she bumps the paddle by accident and over revs the motor.

well its not an official recall yet, as they don't have all the replacement batteries with higher amp rating, YET. Your #2 issue is one of those weird ones that we have not figured out yet either. its totally random and some radios have it manifested and others don't. I don't know if the radios are made by two companies or what! Mine comes on as I left it before turning off the car....and then back on... We looked at 5 others and some did it and others did not.. Radio 9s.... Radio10s... it seemed not to be a factor.

i installed a pioneer in my pure and had to turn it on every time after starting. a few months later, i replaced the pioneer with a smart #10, it comes on after starting and goes off when i shut the car down, but will turn on if i hit the on button with the key out.

my only problem has been the shifter sticking at sub-zero temps, 2 shifter replacements and yesterday i had the brake switch replaced, hopefully i am fixed. my battery has held up well, being parked for weeks at sub-freezing temps when new, and for 2 days at a time in sub-freezing temps with the SG2 hooked up. but i have a pure, no power goodies...
