I live in the mountains in Southern Arizona, and we only get snow occasionally so it doesn't make sense to spend money on snow tires. I do live up a first-gear grade with serious dropoffs though, with a short bridge besides. So I'm thinking of getting AutoSock's for my drive wheels. Amazon has the right size for $79 (no tax, no shipping). Here's the website - http://www.autosock.us/ - with a bunch of interesting videos. Has anyone tried them? TIA - sheureka
I live in a snowbelt state WI, we just received 12" of snow this past week. I have not had any problems on snow covered streets. I just zip by everyone.... my dads lincoln continental got stuck in the driveway but I did not. With the engine in the rear we have the advantage of weight and traction. (we use to put sandbags in the trunk to give us weight in other cars)
I did order the snow tires though, and I am having them installed on monday 4 for $499. As for the AutoSock it looks stupid.....
I know your problem well after living for a dozen years in Alabama... it snows infrequently and there is no snow clearing except for a wavy bulldoze along the major roads. One year the new GM (new to the company; new to AL) first wiped out his company car sliding down the hill outside his house... he phoned in... don't be a wimp!... so he then ditched his own car down the icey slope. Don't listen to others; do what seems best for you.
From the web site; the AutoSock sounds like the best solution. You don't need snow tires; you only need a solution for 5 days a year of unseasonal snow to safely get up and down a snowy drive ? If they fit in the tailgate store; then they are perfect for your needs. Unlike a fwd, you only need the rear wheels covered on a smart.
Last Saturday we were all stuck up here on top of the hill - the pass was closed Friday night and my driveway was a sheet of ice. Nobody even tried to leave until about noon.
I could probably guarantee our not getting any more snow by buying some Auto Socks. - sheureka
