451 smart fortwo

Hi all,

I'm a little bit surprised to find that my Smart needs servicing already. I thought the turbo version should go for 10,000 miles.

Its an 84bhp UK car that has done 7300 miles since March 08.

Over the last few weeks the distance to service appeared to be around 1800 km? but this has dropped to days now and is reading 12, having dropped daily from 20.

Does this sound correct?

the US smart has 10,000 mile service intervals. today i hit 7,500 miles and the wrench blinked when i started it at 7500 miles, i guess meaning i'll need service in 2500 miles. i did my first oil change at 5200 miles. i plan on 5000 mile oil changes and getting dealer service at the 20K mile intervals.

I think it depends on time interval as well as basic oil change (desiel, gas, etc). I thought the service was at 15 000 km, but when I had my car in, they said it should have been around 10 000 km. Having said that, my wrench came on one day to the year of car being "built" date.....having not been reset as to purchase date.
I didn't get the "mileage" counter on mine as I got the 1, 2, 3, 33, etc instead (counting days past service).
I contacted Smart Canada who in turn contacted my local dealer and they called me to answer my question and book a service to look at it just in case it was something other than date (yes I did look to find the date my car was made because it was about 2 months early). So I recommend you call them and see what they say...

Heh, we got a chinook today - anything above -5oC is soooooo nice, even if we had the wind as well. Now, if the feet of snow on the raod would melt (hmmmm..... ok, maybe not all melt tonight... but got snow and ice tires for am).

Hope this helps

hmmmm, my car was built in december '07 and it did flash a "-1" in the odometer space.

Rang the dealer and they said it was dependent on use.

So booked it in. Have to say I'm a little disappointed that it needs servicing so soon.

The dealer is wrong - it's based on time and/or mileage - whichever comes first. - sheureka

Correct, the dealer is wrong. I don't get it why they advise you wrong.. Want to get some $$$
This "problem" is that the car starts to count when it 's build. Not when it's delivered.

Yes, but they will reset it when you get there, or......
You can reset it when you buy it (if you read the manual, and press the right buttons, etc.

Thanks for the info.

How do I check the build date?

Reply to This

It is really easy - something I learnt as a kid.
Driver's door, inside on the frame is a metal plate that has (near the rear side, mid way up before the window):
tire pressure - in the case of the smart, front and back (how many have noticed you have two different sized tires?)
serial number, etc
date built on

Susan (ps - all cars have this)
