Hi,

This is a new one for me. The transmission is placed in Park. But it is not shifting into park. It goes to Neutral according to the indicator and the key is still locked in the ignition.

Is the linkage out of adjustment? Anyone have any ideas?

Car has about 29,000 miles and has had the transmission update.

Thanks, Doug

If it is like the international programming, you must depress and hold the foot brake in to shift the transmission when it locks with the engine off... the key is also locked into place.

Turn the ignition on, hold down the brake pedal and see if it will shift and then release the key when switched off.

On our smarts, the immobiliser position is "R" (we have no "P"). We can get away with turning off and removing the key from the N position... but eventually it will catvch us and we must return it to "R" when switching off.

The transmission program update may have added similar functionality... did you get an update to the owners manual with the software update?

Ian,
Thanks. I know the transmission reprogramming was done, but not sure about an update to the manual. I bought the car about a month ago for my wife. I got it into the Park position last night, but it still wouldn't release the key. It appears that it isn't getting fully into the position for everything to release.

Got the VW in for service this AM and will work on the Smart this afternoon. I'll see if I can get it to release with the brake. Thanks,. Doug

I've been a trico neoform guy for a while now but this time I tried 'trico tech beam blades' for the smart fortwo. They just came out in late 2009 and what's cool is they have a new, lower, slighty off-set attachment mounting that allows the wiper…

Why do people smear out the license plate? Are they afraid of being hunted down? It's not like there is a privacy on plates is there? Walk out on the street and you can photo every car and plate! I don't get it?

Let me add my two cents...I just purchased a new '09 Smart this week (Brabus Coupe). I purchase the Smart as an extra vehicle...I drive a Porsche day to day....but decided to become more Eco friendly (a sign I must be aging). I did a national intern…

That's why the smart factory rack has a light bar and place for a second licence plate. ..and is expensive and hard to find. See attached.
