Hi, i have just been given a smart to me by me father inlaw which had just broke down on him. I have had a look at the engine it is only running on 2 cylinders. Cyliner 1 has melted the spark plug and has no commpression the other 2 are fine. I havent taken the head of yet to have a look but i believe the piston may be broken the car runs ok on 2 cylinders with no horrible bangs or knocks.
I am a fairly able diy mechanic and just wanted to see if i would be out of my depth repairing it myself and help would be great our nearest smart car garage has quoted me £1700 to rebuild the block which seems a bit much.

Rough guess:
You have an old 450 series in the UK... not a 451 in the USA which this web site is dedicated to. The older 450 series has a 698cc M-B engine; the 451 has a 999cc (1 litre) engine from Mitsubishi.Very different donks... hence unlikely anyone in the US can help.
Suggest that you find the UK smart web forums and ask for engine rebuild help there. Also join http://www.fq101.co.uk/
- they have experience with smart engine swaps and rebuilds.

The trick seems to be to get the coolant tank higher than the engine. Evilution show jacking up the front of the car... a good steep driveway may be simpler.

My Car went al the way to the 120 bar on the dashboard. Then I replace the Thermostat. Now the car does run cooler but keep on getting a airlock. anybody know what can be wrong
