I've heard that people do a lot of modifications and upgrades to their smart to make it more "sporty". What's the max speed of a factory smart (after removing the governor if one exists)? Does anyone know what are the typical top speeds after the sport mods?

[Edit: the site says that "smart" is properly spelled with all lower case, so I made the change in my post accordingly.]

Ah very good question, I have some computer modifications coming over from Europe for the project car, hopefully they remove the governor with one of those modification, but with the governor installed the smart will go 160 and while I've not taken my smart up to 160 I've done around 145/150 without issue.

I plan once the computer modifications are installed on the car (hopefully month's end) to get a full video and dyno report of the smarts performance so stay tuned for that.
Whoa, Dude!

160??? That must be Kilometers per hour, not Miles Per Hour, right?
Even without modifications my smart 2001 pulse can beat up lexus rx300 2.2L from 0 to 60-80 km/h
Some guys but a motor bike engine into a smart and got it to go 0-60 miles in less than 5. [http://www.smartuki.com/]

redlining it (6000 rpms) will get you 120mph, i ran the numbers for all the gear ratios with the rear tire diameter, you get about 20 mph per 1000 rpms in 5th gear. if you put larger rear tires on, that will give you a higher top speed automatically by fooling the limiter, but may screw up the ESP and ABS a little. the ESP and ABS have sensors that monitor the speed of wheel rotation to make various calculations.
Hi T.G.,
The top factory speed is 90mph. I'm not sure what you could do to it to bump it up. The reviews say that the
speed is 'electronically limited'. Anyway, 90 will probably seem like 150 in this little bug.

it's pretty sneaky, i drove mine home today, the gas pedal has no feel, i tried to maintain 60mph and found it creeping up to 70mph. i was taking off ramps with 30-40mph limits at 60mph, it really likes to go!

When I took my test drive, the smart factory rep told me an ungoverned stock car will top out at 100-105mph, although that plays hell with the fuel mileage!
Hi
I have had 3 smarts before my new 451 Brabus Cabrio. My last car was a 450 Brabus Cabrio ( old shape ) andI had it "chipped" to 103 BHP and it had a top speed of 111 mph. It was more fun than a Ferrari / Lambo, real seat of the pants driving on the edge.

I have already remapped these 1000cc engines to an easy 110bhp.
With an exhaust and airfilter upgrade we remap again to 125bhp.
Big are now looking at better clutch plates for these as they start to slip at 130bhp.

BIG Turbos are available along with a fully adjustable suspension kit and Bigger wheels
well you're talking about almost doubling the HP, a stronger plate would be quite necessary, driving fast you'd burn the original up pretty quick. what happens to the gas milage when you bump it up to 110HP?
