I just got my ScanGuage and I find the sticky tape doesn't want to stay stuck to the material covering the dash. I'm trying to put it under the dash about in the middle. Suggestions?
I haven't gotten around to ordering a ScanGauge, but my plan is to install it above the rear view mirror, attaching it to the plastic moulding, and running the cable around the windshield to under the dash.
I'd love to know if this seems like it would work.
the velcro provided with it is not the best, my guage fell too and I cleaned the plastic parts well with alcohol. On the dash material velcro will not grab as its not fuzzy enough. You will have to go with more permanent methods of attachment.
My dealer recommended in the left pocket - hang it from the top. The cord will conceal nicely. Clean your ScanGauge with alcohol where the velcro will stick, same on the car side. You will look thru the wheel to see it, it won't overheat in the sun, and you can still use that pocket for stuff. That's what I did.
There are other forums that suggest using a mounting bracket and mounting it right under the lock/unlock buttons. Some drilling is required. Others have suggested using strong earth magnets. However the front part of the dash would have to be taken off. I've also seen the rear view mirror kit, but the wires would have to run underneath the hood.
The next best thing to duct tape, epoxy glue! Glued the velcro tape to the dash with epoxy. Holds like a damn, so far. Had to put it a little to the right of centre as the 12V plug is behind it and wanted to be able to use it.
i'm thinking of installing mine below my radio. i have a pure without the smart radio, i got a 2-DIN dash panel and the scan gauge should fit nicely below the radio, and i can run the cable behind the dash, under the radio.
Here's what I did and it took me under 10 minutes. First, order some small dime-sized earth magnets from Ebay. They are cheap. You'll need a minimum of 4 (2 on the SG and 2 behind the front panel).
Step 1: Put two magnets on top of the SC using the 3M Command Adhesive.
Step 2: I took apart the front panel (lock/unlock panel). Just use a small flat head and take it out. It's very easy and it'll pop right out (just don't force it).
Step 3: Position the SG below and center of the panel, put one magnet inside the little cubby hole and voila, it should stick. I also put duct tape over the magnet inside the cubby hole so it doesn't slide around just in case I take the SG with me. I do the same with the 2nd magnet (taping it down with a small piece of duct tape).
Step 4: I coiled up the excess cable, wrap some velcro around it and stick it to the plastic panel behind the OBD connector.
This is the easiest method. No drilling. No brackets. Plus I can take it with me. The SG stays on securely. You can push the buttons head on and it won't slide or move.
