I'm trying to get some additional keys for my smart 451. My dealer says that there are only two types available. The ones with the remote built in like the two that came with the car ($165 each + programming) and "flat" keys without the remote ($20 each). The dealer says the "flat" keys won't start the car and can't be programmed to enable them to start the car. Every other car I know of including my 07 VW Eos and my 06 Honda Ridgeline have "flat" keys available that can be programmed to start the car (I have them for both those vehicles). My question is "What good are keys if they won't start the car?" Can anybody help or provide more information?
well you can boast about having a smart car that is too smart for plain jane flat keys!..... I don't think the dealer has it correct, like you say than what good are they?
I bought the $200 key replacement plan from my dealer. I think it is good for 2 years. all I have to do is call them and say I lost my key and they will send me a new one.
Im a sucker for car salesman, I bought the $1000 5 year warranty also....
but I got my car 15 months sooner as it was an orphan... so I did not mind spending the extra cash..... I am 100% satisfied with my smart...
i bought my 190E from the original owner and got like 8 keys with the car.
i had like 5-6 keys for my metro, always keep a copy of all house and car keys in my wallet, now i'm "car keyless" in my wallet, the electronic one is too damned big!
is the smart only startable with the electronically enhanced key? i'll call the dealer tomorrow, i'd like a wallet copy for my key.
This might help somewhat, though it won't get your car started, just get you inside. Hopefully your key is locked in the car. If your spare key is at home, call someone at home from your cell phone. It won't matter if you call their cell phone or their land line. Hold your cell phone about a foot from your car door and have the person at home press the unlock button on the spare key set. Your car door is unlocked. Distance is no object: you could be hundreds of miles away.
this seems all too wild! a flat key will not start the car? so if your original key has a dead battery it won't start the car? who is saying all this stuff?
Louis, I read this on the internet and tried it. It didn't work on my cars. So if you have first hand experience with this procedure DON'T continue this crap. Neal
