Does anyone have an ideal what the strap on the back of the passenger seat is for? There is a coat hook off to the side on the cab. And is there a smart seatcover that will not interfere with the side airbags?
Is the strap the "top tether guide" for a child safety seat? Or is it to help lift the folded seat back up if you are reaching in from the rear hatch?
Page 69 US Operator's Manual sorta loosely points at the rear of the seat up near the head rest for the tether guide. All I have is the pdf copy and the pic is all black seat back, so can't see any detail.
Page 58 of the same manual, last "Warning!" on the page reads: only use smart approved seat covers for the vehicle model. Go pester your authorized smart center for availability with the manual in hand ?
seat covers, well, remember the seats have "air bags" in them (head and torso), a restrictive seat cover would render the air bags in the seats useless.
I would guess, and it is only a guess, that since many if not most new cars have airbags in the seats now that you would be able to find a suitable cover at an auto supply store. Though, as Mr Bad Example (a fine example he is!) suggests, I would very carefully check to make sure the cover will accommodate your needs.
If you want to follow Ian's suggestion, look elsewhere for classicsmarts posts on accessories he has for sale. He works at a smart dealership and if they are available, he might have them. You can send him a message through this site, or call him directly. His prices are strictly list plus shipping, but his service is outstanding.
Good luck on your quest. If you find them, post back here to help others.
You're right, after looking at the manual and realizing the d-ring on the floor is the actual tiedown point and the strap is only a guide it makes sense as the child safety point.
The seat covers, I am still looking. Between my dog, and everybody who wants to get in it, I like to get something on them!
For now, I found a bath mat that kind of matches the carpet in the back, easy to clean, doesn't slide and catches any water or mud. But if I leave her in it, she finds her way up front. I am thinking if I get the cargo cover the bar being there will stop her from passing through. That brings up another thing, has anyone driven with the rear window open? I putted around (less than 20mph) with it opened didn't notice anything, dog liked it.
that is one of the things you are severely warned about "has anyone driven with the rear window open? I putted around (less than 20mph) with it opened didn't notice anything, dog liked it." The fumes from the exhaust will come into the cabin, you wont notice anything but maybe a slight head ache and then you can pass out from carbon monoxide poisoning. If driving you'll crash as you loose consiousness.
other than that and that your doggy could be affected faster than you... It sounds like you had a good time!!!
I'm serious you wont notice it til its too late!
I agree with SATO.
Carbon monoxide (CO) is odorless. CO binds to the hemoglobin with more affinity than oxygen (O2), which mean that the hemoglobin will carry the CO to your all your cells better than O2. The reason the engine trap has a good seal is exactly to prevent CO from entering in the car. Again, CO is odorless. While smelling the CO you feel fine, you remain pink, but you could seriously lack O2. Furthermore, because you look pink, it could take some time for the medics to realize that you have CO poisoning.
In theory, the slower you go, the more risks you have of having CO in the car. If you have a long cargo and need to keep the rear window open I would suggest to open your 2 other windows to create a good air circulation in the car.
Looks like I got my orignal question little off track, but I want to follow up were we are. I realize CO could make it way back into the cab, and I will not take legal responsablity if someone out there succumb to it while trying. Not sure exactly how the airflow travels around the back of my fortwo, but as the owner of a jeep, and few hatchbacks, the owner's manual stated operating with the back window removel or open should only be done with the side windows open so as not to trap the gases inside. With any foward movement, the air is flushed out the back. On the lighter side, I believe the dog rather sit up front with me, head out the window, seeing where we are going rather than it the back watching where we have been, but without seatcovers that is not happening.
I did find seatcovers on a English/British site. It stated they were for covering up your old fortwo seats. No American websites. Does anyone know when the side airbags were put into the Euro fortwo?
one time i put some stuff in the back on the way home from work, the rear window didn't "catch", and it was a windy day, the rear window blew open while underway, i noticed more wind than normal inside, then looked in the rear view mirror and noticed no defroster stripes and a clear view out the back! it was so windy wind was blowing from the front to the back.
now i check to make sure the rear window latches properly before i get underway.

Smart really does need to do some advertising in North America. These are great little cars, but you really need to investigate and drive one to know that. Most people just look at them and think "toy". Of course those same people are sitting in the…
