Tire sensors that are part of the valve stem for the tire pressure monitoring system, I am wonder how the flat tire sealant will affect the sensors if it has to be used.
Are the sensors 'sealed' so they are not affected by tire sealant kind of products?
New sensor cost $100.00 to replace due to having to have used the 'emergency fix' for a flat tire.

Has anyone had a flat tire? How did they handle it?

I had a flat 3 days after getting my Smart. It was actually a blow out and the tire couldn't be saved. Had to replace the tire completely. Didn't try and use the sealant. I broke down and bought a real spare tire to keep in the garage just in case. Because of the blow out, my car had to be towed to the dealership. That can be expensive, especially for you guys who live a long way from the dealership. The new complete spare tire cost me about $140.00

i'm thinking of getting a spare, it would fit behind the driver's seat, and a small "bottle jack" and a breaker bar for the wheel bolts. but they have tire goop that plugs all holes up to 1/4" while driving, for the life of the tire. i don't know about blow outs.

More details on the spare please... Is it for the front or back? Where did you get it? TIA!

id get a plug kit before id use the goop

the pressure monitor is mounted on the wheel . the goop is centrifically driven to the outside of the tire. it would be kinda stupid to even include such a kit if it would kill the sensor and cause a dealer visit for the replacement.

try it and let us know.

Hey BE,

Think about it...It would be another way for smart to make money. I can see them in the Board Room....."Let's make a tire with a built in sensor that MUST be replaced if they use the crap in the can we provide them. Smart people can be soooo stupid. HEHEHEHE"

what if the sensor is a sort of teflon like substance and the goop will only stick to rubber surfaces... there are lots of plastics that have teflon coatings or characteristics.

Can anyone tell me how this tire pressure monitoring system works? I mean it isn't directly connected by wires to anything, so how does it tell the tire pressure?

It sends radio waves to the monitor. The monitor keeps track of the set PSI. A 5% change will make it send a signal to the onboard monitor. Every car sold in the United States starting 2008 is to have them. Sensor is good but some time in 2011 2112 its small battery will run out and then $140 smaks per tire. Figure that one boys?
