Has anybody heard anything about the potential for a hybrid electric model in the future? The full-electric version is too limited to be practical in my area...just wondering if there are rumors floating around about an actual hybrid...something to keep my hopes up!

There was a lot of electric version of the 450, smart tested them for a few years and companies like Hybird Technlogies made one-off's for clients, I think they where selling for $45,000+ in the USA, now that's markup!

Thanks Dick n DJ for the website, also smartster...Veerrrrrry spensive mark-up indeed! My garsh...sheesh! Is there any hope for some affordable green lifestyle transpo?

Jen, smart is not producing a hybrid version as of now. I don't know of any us versions that were hybrids and definitely not selling for that much! The vehicle price is set by smart when you order it, dealers CAN NOT mark up the car at all. check out the smart facts on their website, it's pretty impressive stuff, the car is actually 95% recyclable ...pretty good if your looking or a "green lifestyle transo".

Hello Lynne, ty for the reply...Not slamming Smart. I wasn't saying that Smart was doing it, did you go to the website hybridtechnologies.com/products?

smart is a very green car despite having a fully combustion engine. but gasoline, while keeping us dependent on foreign oil, isn't less green than hybrids or electric cars, if you can get the same kind of mileage like the smart can.

hybrids use all sorts of nasty chemicals in the battery, which much be replaced every couple of years, as do electric cars. that said, where does the electricity come from for electric cars? i believe al gore has mentioned it himself, electric cars are not more green because you have to plug them in. the electricity comes from power plants running on coal.

so, until hydrogen cars are available in 20 years, you might as well buy smart. jus' sayin'...

Greencar has a article on the full-electric and the gas version of the smart car. They were both very positive articles.
