2010 DIESEL... US? - 451 smart fortwo

451 smart fortwo

PRESS RELEASE:

smart fortwo cdi: 21 percent more power for the CO2 champion

Stuttgart – For model year 2010 the smart fortwo cdi has been given a clear power boost, yet it remains just as economical and environmentally friendly as before. In future the state-of-the-art three-cylinder diesel engine will produce 21 percent more power and deliver approximately 18 percent more maximum torque. Although this extra power makes the popular two-seater car noticeably livelier, it does not affect its exemplary fuel consumption. As before, it consumes just 3.4 litres of diesel per 100 kilometres (NEDC). Furthermore, with CO2 emissions of 88 g/km it continues to assert its leading position as the CO2 champion. In addition, from model year 2010 all versions of the smart fortwo including the BRABUS variants will comply with the strict emission limits of the EU5 standard.

The smart fortwo enjoys the worldwide reputation of a car that is perfect for the times we live in. Thanks to its unique concept it takes up minimum road and parking space, boasts low fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions and combines mobility, ecology and joie de vivre in a unique way. For the new model year smart is uncompromisingly continuing its philosophy and making the smart fortwo even more environmentally friendly and attractive.

The most important change: the smart fortwo cdi with a length of 2.69 metres is redefining economy and driving fun. Its reengineered diesel engine now has an output of 40 kW/54 hp – seven kW or 21 percent more than its predecessor. Moreover, the new three-cylinder engine delivers maximum torque of 130 Newton metres (an increase of 18 percent). This makes the car that is brimming with lifestyle appeal even more agile and fun to drive. Thanks to the power boost it now sprints from 0 - 100 km/h in just 16.8 seconds. However, the increased liveliness does not affect the outstanding fuel consumption and emission figures of the trendy two-seater car. The combined fuel consumption still stands at 3.4 litres per 100 kilometres and the extremely low CO2 emissions of just 88 g/km mean that the smart fortwo cdi is still the CO2 world champion among all production cars with combustion engines.

The 21 percent power increase is primarily realised through modified pistons in conjunction with adjusted injection and charge pressure parameters. Furthermore, thanks to the increased torque it was also possible to lengthen the gear ratios of the third and fourth gears by ten and eleven percent respectively, and to lower the shifting points in the automatic programme. This reduces the rpm level in speed ranges used particularly frequently – with benefits in terms of fuel consumption and noise level. The smart fortwo cdi is equipped with a closed diesel particulate filter and emissions are below the limit values laid down in the EU5 standard.

Thanks to optimised engine and transmission management the petrol models of the popular two-seater car also comply with the demanding EU5 exhaust gas standard. Not only does this help the environment – in many countries it entails clear tax advantages.

New contrast components in shiny pearl black, which further upgrade the interior of the smart fortwo, and a new folding armrest available as an option, provide for increased comfort.

Further optional equipment includes the smart hands-free system with a colour display and extensive multimedia functions. It features the sassy design typical of the brand, a Bluetooth® interface, voice control and optional iPod® connection and is perfectly integrated in the vehicle electronics and the audio system. It is simple and safe to operate via a wireless controller on the centre console.

All updated smart fortwo variants can be ordered now. The prices for the petrol models are unchanged. In future the 40 kW/54 hp smart fortwo cdi will cost €11 790 as a coupé in the pure equipment line (German price incl. VAT).

WHY does the US, being the smarts largest market, get only hand me downs after the rest of the world?

Don't think the US is the smart's largest market; from a Daimler press release:

"Sales of the smart fortwo on the German home market were also up, with deliveries of the two-seater having increased by seven percent to 19,700 units since the beginning of the year (January-July 2008: 18,400)."

US sales of smart through July 09: 9,985

Hmm, Americans still have a learning curve to deal with. Don't forget it was only yesterday that the Auto industry was drowning the US consumer with cheap SUV's. Also, keep in mind in Europe they have more model choices. We don't have the real Brabus and we don't have the cdi diesel. As long as our economy is struggling, consumers will hold off on big ticket spending. Eventually things will turn around.

FIATman has a very valid point. I know I've heard it talked about before, but wouldn't it be great to reoccupy one of the many idle assembly plants here in the US and build smart's here? Think about it, put back to work suppliers, there'd be a need for trucks to ferry the smarts all across the country, Hmmm how many smarts would fit on a railway car that used to haul SUV's. The impact on our own economy, our environment and our roadways would be fantastic.

Hey David Schebri, if you are reading this... what is your thought on US production of smarts in the near future?

Hang on, it took Mercedes just over ten years to introduce a right hand drive Smart cdi diesel to the Uk market.

The rest of Europe had the superb little 799cc Turbo Diesel from it's launch way back in 1999 and certain people here in the Uk did import a few of the Left hand drive cars into the Uk.

The Smart ForTwo CDi is still the cleanest combustion engine available anywhere in the World giving out only 88Co2.

Here in the Uk our gallon of fuel or gas as you like to call it over there is larger than yours at 4.5 Litres.

Our little Cdi returns fuel figures of over 100 miles per gallon and averages around 85mpg in normal driving.

It has only been available here in the Uk since March 2009 so it is still a rare sight but as in the States people are affraid of it's tiny dimensions feeling it cannot be safe.

The Cdi has been available for sale in Canada for some years and who knows in the future Mercedes may introduce it to America but i'm told diesel transport is not so popular and it's a fact Mercedes are losing money on every smart they produce.

I still own a copy of the November 1999 Diesel Car magazine which is for sale here in the Uk which had a feature on the newly released Smart Cdi in Germany.

Even then it's economy was stuff of legend and i had always wanted a diesel powered Smart because i'm nuts on diesel cars.

Surprisingly those ten years went quite quickly and in November 2009 i took delivery of a little silver CDi.

It's not a fast car and acelleration is slow but it was a dream realised and i'm chuffed to bits with it.

I'm sure in years to come when the Smart is accepted by all in America Mercedes will introduce further models.

America is such a huge market for car manufacturers that no manufacturer would denie potential owners with cars they want.

I'm sure in years to come all Smart variants will be on sale in America, Mercedes have to be sure you are ready for their lovely little car for afterall The United States of America is a vast country and such a small car would easily get lost.

My question is why aren't they looking into building them here? I am sure there is an old GM or Chrysler plant available and I'd bet there are folks who would jump at the jobs. Heck, I am retired, but I would love to work building them. BTW for those who don't want to dig out the calc it gets 69.18 MPG (US)

The reason they willnot build them in the Us is because they will be too costly to produce and there will not be sufficient demand in thre huge Us market.

Maybe they ought to try ADVERTISING!

Contrasting the old CDI model that was available in Canada with the newer and cheaper gas car apparently defeats the efficiency gains of the diesel because of its much higher maintenance requirements. So people had to pay more for it and pay more to service it, making the "guzzling" new car more affordable in practice.

I thought diesel cars were cheaper to run.. including maintenance....

they should be, no spark plugs or ignition system, just a higher pressure fuel pump, but this would have a turbo, most diesels here last 300-500,000 miles without much bother...the old MB diesels ran forever...

They certainly are here in the Uk where due to far higher quality fully synthetic oils service intervals for diesels areoften twice as long as the gas variant.

A friend of mine runs a Citroen C1 diesel and Citroen recommend the oil to be changed every two years or every 20,000 miles which ever comes first.

Service intervals for Smart diesels are not quite as long as Citroen's but still you donot have to change diesel oil as regularly as you had to some years ago.

Servicing charges are no more expensive for the Smart CDi as they are for the petrol or gas version.
