Yes it happened... I got caught in an end to end fenderbender, I was the middle car, and my little silver cutey was totaled... I couldn't believ it but the front frames (there are 4 of them) got distorted
in the crunch so that she couldn't be saved... The body shop that deals with the smart(100miles away)said we were just one of many smarts totaled for the same reason... Calif law states that bent frames have to be replaced causing a complete removal of the interior... So, the moral to the story is to buy replacement insurance not just collision as I had... I didn't buy a new one for the following reasons:

1. No cruise control.
2. Uncomfortable ride.
3. Fair to middlan' gas mileage when premium is taken into account.
4. Seat backs too high to see behind and side mirrors too small.
5. Hurky jurky transmission.
6. Too expensive for what you get.

BUT, it has better curbside appeal than a Lamborgini...

I'll wait until they bring out the electric model...

Sorry to hear of your accident~! Hopefully there were no injuries other than the lost of your vehicle. Even if totalled the insurance companies should have paid you full value for your smart. I say companies because it was a multi-car accident. Good luck . . .

To my delight you were right...

Sorry about the accident.

Since the smart doesn't meet your needs, what do you plan to get to replace it?

Best of luck recovering from the accident & getting your transportation needs back in order.

I can't resist mentioning that with a smart you are getting hybrid mileage for half the price. Something to think about. You don't have to use premium gas; the computer will adjust the timing, but the mpg will decrease. Even with premium gas, you are paying about 10-15% more for the gas, but you are getting an improvement in mpg that is greater than that as compared with any of the alternatives. Add to this the fact that the lower carbon impact on the environment is a benefit that doesn't change with the additional cost of premium fuel.

Thanks for your comment Bill, I loved that little car but it had its faults which I chose to overlook because of its uniqueness and shear FUN!!!!! I used to defend my little toy as well and I don't blame you for it...

But really, milage when primium is considered is: 29 to 36, hardly hybrid milage... (33 X .88 and 41 X .88 where .88 is the difference between your low and high [10-15%] ).... AND in addition to reduced milage on regular translates into, reduced power and voided waranty (the owners manual says premium)... AND, according to the Manufacturers window sales sticker that came with the car, Smart is just a little WORSE than the average car...

I guess the good news is that you lived to talk about you accident.
In some other car who knows?
When buying a car I always look for crumble zones and safety.

I don't imagine any buzzBox living thru that... The air bag went off
and protected me, so I wasn't unhappy with its safety...

I'm glad that you're ok. Although, with the reasons you listed, why did you ever by a smart? Those reasons seems like things you'd notice in a test drive or when researching the car prior to ordering. Just my opinion.

That's a good question... My only excuse is that It was CUTE, CUTe, CUte, Cute, cute and I had to take one home... Kind of reminded me of my first husband, he was cute beyond belief but by the time I got him home I discovered several nasty defects so I dumped him... I'm still waiting for the electric smart...

So do you now have an electric husband? LOL Glad to hear the safety aspect of the smart came through.

Ya know, he's not electric, but he's shocking some times.

Another option is just to keep the stock look and install a 500 watt amp to run the speakers and subwoofer. You can install a subwoofer under the glove compartment with an 8" Kickers. Of course you will need to upgrade your door speakers. I sugges...
