Ok, I admit it. I am stumped. If you look at the "Air Distribution Control Knob" (<<---- anyone want to bet or confirm that in German that is all one word? hehehehe), there is, at the bottom, a little "eye" or lense looking thingy.

I have pored over the owners manual, but I can find no explanation for this item. I initially thought it would be some sort of light that would let me know when the a/c compressor was cycling on and off, but no, that's not it. Is it an internal air tempertaure sensor to tell the compressor when to cycle on and off, perhaps?

Maybe it is a hidden camera so "they" can start watching me again! Now where did I put my medication this morning? (JOKE!) Or is it possible that our German car with a Japanese engine all put together in France also contains a Buddhist dimension?

Anyway, any insight (no pun intened) that may solve this mystery is appreciated. I'm not losing sleep over this mystery ....yet. ;-)

That is EXTREMELY clever, Mr. Orwell! Laughing aloud here ... and only slightly miffed that I didn't think of that first! :-)

Levitating Fiat Uno, Cambridgeshire, England, 1992

I suspect the car in this picture has one of those mysterious third eyes, too!

Maybe just maybe it is ZE French spying on us, gathering inteligence..... "Teach the Americans to boycott our wines! we will invade them with cute economical cars and little by little we will dominate their market.. Mierde! the Japs beat us to it!

Solar sensor...helps to regulate auto temp control by judging solar stresses in cockpit.

2 ideas:

1) temperature sensor?

2) motion sensor for the factory alarm?

Guess I should look it up in the wiz system and see what it is really...

Its the "go fast as stink, button" To be used ONLY in emergency situations. Push twice for levitation.. See Fiat pic above!

AB, does your smart have the factory alarm? i got the mystery eye as well, i only have two factory options, AC and the alarm. maybe we can narrow this down when we find someone without AC or an alarm.

Yes, Mr. B. E., I have both A/C and the factory installed alarm. I like your deductive investigative approach. I am a mere Watson to your Holmes. :-)

Actually, I don't want to know what it really is. I like the way this thread is going with all the interesting speculation.

You may be on to something, Daniel. Perhaps we should continue to speculate. I shall ask Pastor, Captain, smart owner / driver, and fellow member here, Jack Diehl, to provide spiritual guidance in this quest!

In the event that smartster gleans the use of the "thrid eye", we could continue speculation under the premise that many things have more than one meaning and use! :-)

Here are a couple of speculative lines we could explore:

1. Possibly it is an "A.R.E.D.D." (i.e., an Automated Rhino-Exploration Deterrent Device). I am NOT talking about the ungulate found in African and southest Asia; I am talking about the pandemic activity frequently seen at red lights. Go in for a dig and a painful, yet safe, behavior-altering ZAP hits the driver!

2. Could it be the portal through which Ann Sothern (as Gladys Crabtree) sees, knows, and directs all of Jerry Van Dyke's (as her long-suffering son, Dave) actions? [N.B. If you're not a Baby-Boomer, this may be lost on you. Look up "My Mother The Car" on www.imdb.com]

It is an "IQ" measuring device. It monitors your driving and when your IQ falls below 75-the car shuts off. Thus a "Smart" car. This explains why no dealers in Arkansas or West Virgina. Lord Im sorry for that and all the little pygmys down in Africa.
