Second request for input

I am getting only 23.5 miles to the gallon and just drive around town for short trips 4-5 times a week for less than 15 miles per trip. I think I should be getting more but dealer here says that's about right for Sarasota due to hot weather? I'm not so sure. Thanks, JMD

try driving without the AC on, top it off and drive 20 miles, then top it off again. i drive around at 85-90F in stop and go and get 50mpgs with the ac off.

Goodness...I kinda like A/C. It's worth the loss of MPG if that's the only deal. However I do thank you for your input and keep cool, Mr BE

My car is a convertible and so I do go occasionally top down noe A/C but not in the dead of summer here inn Sarasota.

We ran with a/c all the month of July due to 100+ weather still got 32-36mph. We found that keeping a clean air filter in the car made a difference. Are you using premium gas with an octane of at least 91? It makes a difference.

I don't understand why your fuel consumptions are so low?
I run a diesel Cabriolet (heavier) with AC on most days and get 77-82mpg
Are the American 451s tuned differently?

Calm down for Christ's sake- this is a friendly forum (?) so no need to shoot down newbies when they post for the first time. So cut the sarcasm

My 2 cents
1) Look at your driving style - ease up on your right foot
2) Make sure the engine is switched off in traffic
3) Do not carry excess weight in the car
4) Using air conditioning can affect the fuel consumption by 10%
5) Having your roof down has major drag on the airflow of the car
6) As I asked before - I believe the American imported Smarts are tuned differently and do not
achieve the same fuel consumption as the UK varieties.
7) Tell me WHAT car actually achieves its quoted MPG figures? The MPG figures are obtained
on a test track in ideal conditions that a lot of us struggle to replicate on the road
8) If it doesn't improve, take it back to Smart ( I assume it's under warranty ) and get them to
take a look at it. There could be a simple explanation.

Shell is the "TOP" of the Top Tier Gas...YUP
1)Your engine may be sensing a low grade of Premium Fuel, or the station you go to is cheating you... HOW.. They use Mixer Pumps to get each grade of fuel... They may be mixing a little regular grade into the Premium Pump to increase profits (yes they do that , and get caught at it all the time)... Most cars won't notice... BUT... When its severely HOT outside, it lowers the octane rating, and your car may be sensing high intake charge temps, and slight Ping because of High Temp & Poor Fuel, and its Retarding your Ignition Spark, lowering fuel economy... Change Gas Stations to eliminate what might be the problem...
2) Take it to the dealer, you may have a BAD sensor...
3)Wait for cooler weather, so the air molecules are more densely packed, making for better combustion...

The key to the problem is short trips.
Like any car, the smart uses a lot energy from a cold start to recharge the battery and electrically heat some emissions control equipment. That energy has to come from somewhere... the petrol tank.

A couple of months ago I started work that requires only 5km drive from home. Toor far to walk, too close to be economical driving. My fuel economy has been shot to pieces. - about 50% higher than normal. I constantly monitor it with a Scangauge. The smart uses a LOT of fuel when cold. The mixture is set rich by the management system.

And do not use any ethanol blends or low octane fuel. Read the fuel recommendations in the owners manual.

Which gas station now days do not add Ethanol? Even shell posted above uses 10% ethanol.

You can go on line and find out which stations in your area do not have ethanol additive. There is one here in Sarasota on Main that does not.

Your car looks VERY nice, you've done great work. But one thing stands out - the silver headlamps. Need to paint them black! Instructions at Evilution, of course. My son and I did mine, and they look like they came that way.

Oh, and by the way, GREAT comedic writing - I laughed multiple times during the reading of this review. Not only was I interested in it, but I had great fun reading it. Thanks for that too!

Rick, thanks SO much for this great and detailed review! I hope to get one of these on order within the next few days myself. Jeez, it's half the price of the other one. But I have one quick question - I saw people talk about the other one (Scangau…
